Mudflap - what to look for?

Hello fellow X-Trailers,

Sadly, one of my front mudflap (including 3 screws) was stolen in a shopping centre car park the very first afternoon I got the car.

Thus it may be worthwhile to investigate other kinds of sensible mudflap available on the market other than the genuine Nissan one. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for and where to buy? Is the soft rubber material better than the rigid plastic, pros and cons?

FYI I do around 30% softroading and within limits of the x-trail.

You can always have a look at the selection of rubber from clark rubber and do a bit of DIY.

Also have a look at this at this link and see if it helps

Re: Mudflap - what to look for?

How low are some people that they steal mudflaps of all things?!?!

I suspect they didn't pinch both as the wheels were probably turned and they couldn't get their screwdriver in the wheel arch between the tyre and the mudflap...

As Shane mentioned, check out the DIY mudflaps (mine were successful, and you could trim them to the same size as factory ones and you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference from a distance).

Also try the wreckers - I'm sure they'd still have plenty...

Thanks guys,

Shane, the link is useful and I will definitely have a look at Clark Rubber this weekend, although my wife may not like the look of it.

Jalal, thanks for the offer. I will definitely call you if all fours are stolen in the future.

Nissan is asking $182 for ONE mudflap by the way, no wonder people steal it.

Good idea Rich, I will try wreckers as well.

Yes some people are so low. I have previously lost 2 number plates, number plate holders, blind spot mirrors, windscreen wiper arms, tyre valve caps, and believe or not 16 wheel bolts (except the lockable ones). But who'd have guessed - an X-Trail mudflap? Are there anything people wont bother stealing from an X-Trail?

Re: Mudflap - what to look for?

William,

I'm suprised that they managed to steal the mudflap that easily, cause as far as I know ALL Series II (ST-S included) have hex head screws in every part of the car (including mudflaps and tweeters and the rest)

ALL Series I screws are phillips heads.

They must have targetted you to be able to have the right tools at the right time.

Am now thinking of changing my screws to hex as well.

You wont find these at the wreckers cause it is the first thing that gets taken-off. I have never seen mudflaps on an exy during any of my visits.

I've yet to come across any hex screws - everything in my Series 2 uses philips head screws...

Re: Mudflap - what to look for?

Look harder Rich, the mudflaps in particular have hex screws in Series II.

I'm pretty sure as I worked on many when installing the fender trim.

Also, the DIN pockets and the tweeter brackets (but you don't have those in the ST)

Re: Mudflap - what to look for?

When I put on my "clarke rubber special" mudflaps a few weeks ago, I only used a philips-head screwdriver... 3 diagonally along the front and one below the sill... If I had to use a hex screwdriver I wouldn't have been able to do it because I don't have one emoticon
