Test drive today - and some questions
Hi Guys - Well, I had a test drive of an X-Trail today and I can certainly see why you are all so keen on it. It's a great little rig and in all likelihood, I will be signing on the dotted line next week.
I have a few questions and while the answers may be available elsewhere on this forum, I do need to know ASAP, so please bear with me.
1. Do the plastic front bumper and wheel arch covers really pop back into shape after a minor bingle?
2. Is it worth getting the nudge bar or is there something more substantial on the market?
3. Jalal, I noticed in another thread that I cannot now find, you posted something that showed what looked like a really substantial bumper on a Japanese version?
4. Are the those plasticky headlight units strong enough or should I order headlight guards as well?
5. Is it worth going for the TI with the sunroof pack or does somebody make an aftermarket sunroof that would be better value?
6. Has anyone fitted electronic rustproofing and if so, is it worth it?
7. Is there a better tyre than the standard? I ask because when I bought the Jeep, for a very little extra (I think around $50 a wheel) I got larger and better All Terrain tyres as part of the deal. I wonder if a Nissan dealer might do that?
Thanks, guys. As I said, a very impressive machine. Think I will probably go for white.

Re: Test drive today - and some questions
Thanks, Gordon. I do a lot of night driving in rural areas which means lighting and frontal protection are high priorities for me. I'll need somewhere to hang my spotties.

Re: Test drive today - and some questions
Panfa,
I'm happy that you enjoyed the ride.
Some answers for you and existing threads you can refer to for more info.
I will also be moving this thread to the FAQ section of the forum where you can get more responses.
1. The plastic guars do pop-out, but I wont be testing my luck There have been reports (from Canada) of them shattering in freezing conditions when hit with a shopping trolley. Guess nothing for us to worry about here
2. The factory nudge is a joke and you can actually see what is made of from an existing thread with pics, which Noel has posted HERE. Some alternative and much better quality nudges can be found in THIS thread. One thing to mention is that if you score the factory nudge for free, then go for it. You can always sell it and upgrade for a better one later on.
3. Is THIS what you mean? HERE is another Japanese site with some goodies.
4. The plastic headlights are good and strong enough, but for the type of highway driving you do, I would recommend the headlight protectors. Try to score them for free from the dealer.
5. The sunroof is matter of personal preference I would guess. Personally I would have wanted to have one in my ST, but I couldn't justify paying close to $4,500 more to get one in the Ti. I have priced the aftermarket sunroof from the same company that fit the sunroof for nissan as an option and it was around $2,500
6. HERE is an existing thread that discusses electronic rust proofing.
7. Yes, there are many better tyres than the standard and again it depends on your type of driving and yes, you can negotiate with the dealer to have the stock tyres upgraded to A/T.
Good luck to you next week.

Yes it doesn't offer much protection but then neither do any of the "nudge" bars on the market.
Phil, I can vouch for the effectiveness of my nudge in terms of protection and I've seen that in action
I would have been up for a front bumper replacement if it wasn't for this nudge. Reason being it's attached away from the bumper and the gap between them does the magic trick.
Yes, the factory one looks nice though.

That steel bumper or which at least looks to be steel (the one with the winch bar on it) is something I'd like to get my hands on. You'f need to upgrade the shockies and springs though, I think.

Re: Test drive today - and some questions
Yes, I'm at liberty to tell you that, if I can remember the company name that is LOL
It's been a long time since I had it priced, but it was a company in Artarmon-Sydney.
Let me see of I can dig-up the info. on them, it's been like 2+ years.
