Guys,

I found an easy solution to mount a reversing camera. Have a look HERE

I saw one attached to a 4WD today on my way back from work and it looked cool.

I bought one of these style camera's off eBay last week from THIS seller. If you find a current listing for the license plate camera and look closely at the pictures it appears that there are IR LEDs down each side of the lens. I asked this seller about this and they confirmed that this unit DOES NOT have IR night vision.

I bought the unit anyway because the application I need it for does not really need IR. Well the unit turned up this week (quick service from HK) and there really are IR LEDs down each side of the lens!! This is strange because even the picture on the packet does not show these and the Min Lux is stated as 2.0 (IR units state 0.0 as they can see in pitch black).

I have yet to test it out but I can't imagine that they would fit them in the unit and not have them active! Looks like I have scored myself an IR reversing cam for $45 shipped!! emoticon

The unit is quite chunky but looks well made. Not sure I would ever put it on my license plate (I have other plans for mine! emoticon ) but I could imagine it mounted down low on the under bumper plastic guard (if you don't have a towbar).

Also comes complete with a loooong AV cable.

Anyway, thought you might like to know before I tell the seller about the IR LEDs and they up the price!! emoticon

Quick update, I just hooked up the license plate camera today and it definitely DOES have IR!! emoticon

Compared to other cams though it is not as good, the IR LEDs are on permanently, not switched depending on light levels like most others. Also the picture quality is ok but not as good as my current reversing cam.

For $45 though you can't go too wrong!! emoticon

Hey Adam,

How does the IR at night compare to your standard cam with reversing lights ?

Adam,

Did you end-up mounting it on the number plate or somewhere else?

Re: Where to mount a rear view camera? ** Now with DIY Guide **

Jalal / Kev, I am not actually using this as a reversing cam!! This is "baby cam" inside the car to watch over the baby seat while it is in the rear facing mode. I am using the AV input on the head unit and powering it off the accessory socket in the boot. I went for this camera because it will fit nicely to the headrest posts! emoticon

So I can't compare picture quality I'm afraid, although I tried it yesterday and pointed around outside the car and it did not seem quite as clear as my current reversing cam, not bad though and in the car the IR works well.

I may end up taping over the IR LEDs anyway as I am not sure how good it will be for a baby having IR beaming down at it.

Having read all these and then in the news about someone not far from here backing into a neighbour's child, I thought I'd go to Adam's ebay source and have ordered one of the wireless reversing camera setups ($100.90 posted). With grandchildren often visiting and neighbours with young children it seems small insurance to have a bit better visibility. I'll keep you informed.

Re: Where to mount a rear view camera? ** Now with DIY Guide **

The wireless camera and monitor arrived today. I have gone for the fog lamp blank position also, and because the camera has a bracket each side, screwed the camera to the bumper before putting the blank (with hole drilled (nearly in the centre!) back over it. Because it is wireless and only needs power, I cut the fog light plug off and soldered the wires together. Under the jack I have cut the fog light wire in the loom, and when time allows will get back to this and join the fog light wire to the reverse light wire using the bridging thingy provided in the kit. This will power the camera when the car is in reverse.
Now I just have to work out where to put the monitor. Since the screen itself is small, it would probably fit in the empty din box if I dismantled the unit (advantages: could be set in a little to avoid sunglare; not too obvious so some dork doesn't break in to steal it cos it looked like a gps; disadvantage - have to find somewhere else for the jila mints, business cards etc.
