Where to mount a rear view camera? ** Now with DIY Guide **

The Pioneer in-dash DVD player I have now has the ability to take a rear view camera input so I figure .. why not!! emoticon

I was thinking of fitting it into the fog light blanking plate, this would mean I can cut it and flush mount it and know that I can always remove it and replace the cover without having to patch the bumper.

Do you think that is sensible?

The alternatives I can think of are:

1. Inside the rear window
2. hanging under the rear bumper

The thought behind 1 is that it will not get dirty and if I place it at a point where the rear wiper clears the glass then it will always have a clear view even if it is raining. For 2, I think it might be too low.

Just thought I would run it past you guys and see what you think in case I have not thought of something obvious!

Re: Where to mount a rear view camera?

Hi Adam,

It depends how big the camera is.

For small ones, the best spot for them would be under the chrome tailgate/number plate garnish and you can even use the existing number plate lights for power and to feed the wires through.

Here is an example.

Re: Where to mount a rear view camera?

THIS is the unit I am thinking of getting ..

It is bigger than other cameras BUT it has the ability to provide a mirror image which is really important when the image on a screen that you look at facing forwards. In fact Pioneer recommend to only use cameras with a mirror feed. I have not found any others with this facility.

It is still not massive but too big to put where you suggest. Nice idea though.

Hi Adam,

In this case this will be your best option and position:

The space for the rear fog light is 19cm long and 4.5cm high and I think it's deep enough to take the camera.

The plastic fill is widely available at the wreckers emoticon "I know that for a fact" LOL

I mounted mine at the rear, under the chrome tailgate/number plate garnish. Beware you will need an extremly wide angle lens to see both side of the bumper bar. I used a 120 degrees one.

Re: Where to mount a rear view camera?

Good point siukalo! I think the cameras I am looking at are around 92 degrees.

Do you have any details on the make/model of camera you have used? Can you get me a photo of how you mounted it?

Thanks!

posticon Re: Where to mount a rear view camera?

Hi Guys, reading this thread I just had to reply. Since I am curious if anyone ever tried to wire a rear view camera to the build-in display in the Nissan navigation set.

The display and navigation looks the same as the one in the Primera that I had before I bought the X-Trail and this one automatically switched to the rear view camera as soon as you put in in reverse.

That would be a nice mod emoticon

Re: Where to mount a rear view camera?

Yeah i believe there usually is a wire that connects from either the camera or the TV to your reverse lights wiring.

I would definately go with the foglamp blank position. I was thinking thats where im going to fit my camera when i finally get my LCD/DVD system.
