4wd overheating/ rear wheels locking

hi all

we have just returned from a trip to stockton and we arnt very happy!

we experienced the same 4wd overheating problems that everyone on here is talking about, but our back wheels seemed to be locking up when we tried to take off (kinda like trying to take off with the hand brake on) there was a squeeling coming from the rear aswell. it all started to happen at the end of the day when we got to the soft sand on the exit and we had to be towed 3 times.when it was being towed the rear wheels started spinning again. Once we got to the harder ground, it was fine. Anyone else had this prob?

the exy was doing so well, getting up some of the big dunes first try, while some the bigger 4wd's i was with had to try 3 or 4 times. and to add insult to injury, i had some tool yell out "get a real 4wd" while we were being towed out

im taking it to nissan to see what they have to say > we are pretty concerened about this

ps, had tires at 16psi, drove for the first half of the day in lock before i realised it could do it fine in auto

Re: 4wd overheating/ rear wheels locking

Hi Matt,

Yes, it has happened to a couple of members here as well and incidentally at Stockton.

HERE is an existing thread that covers this problem.

Our 4WD system seems to be too sensitive to soft sand and when I was at Stockton I stayed in AUTO mode and used LOCK only on soft patches of the sand near the ship-wreck, but I didn't have any problems.

Shane (who had an exy then) was doing exactly the same as the rest of us and his system got overheated for some reason.

Now, if your rear wheels were locking up too, I believe that your 4WD sensor has given-up and this can be caused by engaging the 4WD LOCK mode while turning and/or reversing, which Nissan strongly advise against in the owners manual.

Better to have this checked-out by the dealer soon.

As for the tool that yelled out "get a real 4WD". Well my response to him would have been "I'll see ya when you get bogged in yours and don't expect me to pull ya out" hehehe

Re: 4wd overheating/ rear wheels locking

they gave no explanation on the over heating, they just said it happens in sand sometimes emoticon

as for the locking in the rear wheels, they reckon its happened because the viscos coupling in the rear diff was binding, caused by the system trying to drive all the wheels at different speeds. they say it happens in biggewr 4bys sometimes.

Every thing in the 4wd system checked out fine and the tell me its nothing to be concerened about. ill try and get back to stockton soon and chane me driving habits and see if it happens again
