Towbar electrics

Hi all,
What sort of towbar electrics have you got? I need to know what to ask for on my options list.

Cheers

Graham

Re: Towbar electrics

If what I'm seeing is correct, theres only 1 socket? In the UK we have 2, one for the lights and another for charging the caravan battery, running the fridge, and something else I can't remember! Here is what they look like. The Aus socket looks much neater.

Re: Towbar electrics

Hi Graham,

Yes, the Australian towbar wiring configuration is different than the UK one and we only have one socket for the lights only.

Here is how it looks like fitted to the exy (never mind that cross bar under the tow ball, it's just a bike rack)

Image

The wiring socket is on left side in this pic.

The shape of the UK spec towbar is different as well, it's shaped like a swan neck (like THIS )

Re: Towbar electrics

Hi Guys,

When I was fitting the LED tail lights today, I had to remove the plastic trim at the rear to get to the wiring harness of the tail lights.

When I removed the trim from both sides I saw 2 wiring harnesses (on each side) attached in there and not being used.

Upon further investigation it turns out that these wiring harnesses are meant for the towbar plugs to connect directly to them!

In most cases where I have seen a factory towbar getting fitted by the dealer, I have seen them tap into the main wiring loom in the floor area, which can only suggest they either don't know about the existence of the towbar wiring harness behind the plastic trim OR they're too lazy to wire it up correctly.

If you ever get a factory towbar, I suggest you use these connections.

Something else of interest caught my attention while I had the rear trim removed emoticon

Did you know we had clear PVC type hoses running on each side at the back of the exy and feeding into the lower portion of the rear fender?

At first I thought these must be some fuel lines or something, but then when I saw their size was about the size of the garden hose and clear, I followed them and they actually start from the roof rail area and used to drain any excess water down and out of the car emoticon

Wow! The things they can hide behind the trim LOL

Hi Graham,

I think I have misunderstood your earlier post and thought you're talking about the rear plastic covers of the rear seats.

If you're after good and durable covers for the rear seats which are split, then check out the leather option which I mentioned in THIS thread.

Let me see if I understand you - are you saying there is already a trailer socket attached to the factory harness, with enough length of cable in the loom to re-route it to outside the car and mount the socket onto the towbar frame?
