Re: What could this noise be?

There is a very good chance the noise could be present only when the car is moving - the engine is under load while accelerating, but not under any load if you just rev it in neutral.

You could try this, although it has risks involved - You'd need to first find out what rev-range the noise is ocurring at when you're driving. Then stop the car, leave your foot on the brake, and put it into gear, and rev the engine (with foot still on the brake) to simulate accelerating with the engine under load, up to the rev-range which previously reproduced the noise.

This would be handy to repeat to an exhaust place or Nissan to assist in finding the problem.

Re: What could this noise be?

Rich,

An easier way would be to get the nissan mechanic to drive the car and hear the noise himself emoticon

This is exactly what my dealer has done. I told them the noise was becoming obvious at around the 2,500rpm and we kept circling and driving around blocks until it happened 2-3 times and that was enough reason for the mechanic to put the car on the hoist and pin-point the muffler problem.

Anyway, I now have a brand new nissan muffler in the garage sitting there doing nothing, since I got the twins emoticon

Does anyone know if Nissan has changed/updated the design of the muffler so this same thing doesn't happen in another 40 thou kms?

Re: What could this noise be?

I have a similar noise. I can also smell a burning smell coming from the right hand side front wheel as you are sat in the car. The noise is definitely the transmission though because if I put the clutch in doing about 80mph the noise stays at the same pitch even though the engine is at idle.

Taking it to Nissan on Tuesday will let you know if I sort it.

Re: What could this noise be?

Hi Guys,

We had a noise similar to the one that you describe (ie at speed in gear as well as neutral) we also had the burning smell but from the front left.

Turned out to be the front left wheel bearing about $300 in total for nissan to replace.

Re: What could this noise be?

Update,

Took the car to Nissan twice with the noise from the front and after extensive road testing their chief mechanic says its road noise and the wheel bearing is fine. The exhaust was also rattling a bit and they said it needed a new one.

Took the car to kwick fit for the exhaust and they welded it for FREE. Exhaust fixed.

Not satisfied that the noise was road noise I took the car to an independent garage and asked them to change the drivers wheel bearing. After the change the car is now super quiet again and I have my xtrail back. Burning smell has also gone.

Hope this may help other owners who get the low road type noise and the burning smell. Car has only done 40,000 miles.

Re: What could this noise be?

Nick, I'm no expert on the legalities of what I'm about to recommend, but if I were you, I'd be approaching Nissan and asking them to reimburse you the cost of parts and labour that you paid to have the wheel bearing replaced. It might be a dead-end, and it might've been alot easier to achieve if you happened to have kept the old wheel bearing. This wouldn't be the first time Nissan hasn't come to the party with repairs (and I'm assuming your wheel bearing would've still been in the warranty period?)
