Marking Forum As Read - A very handy feature!!!

Here is a very handy feature that I've only just been made aware of, thanks to Adam (Rybky).

The Australian X-Trail Forum consists of a number of sub-forums.

The current sub-forums to date are:

- Main Chat
- Introductions
- Events
- Trip Reports
- Questions & Answers
- Buy, Sell and Swap
- Discount Offers
- Announcments

The "Mark forum as read" feature allows you to easily distingush between posts that you have read and posts that you haven't.

Marking a forum as read basically sets a bookmark in time on the sub-forum your viewing.

Let us use an example:

You have been viewing the "Questions & Answers" sub-forum and have read all posts contained there. You simply press the link "Mark forum as read" which is located on the top left of the page as shown here:

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

This will mark the sub-forum as being read.

Any new posts made after this time will automatically trigger a "New Reply" image to be displayed next to the sub-forum the post was posted in on the main page as shown here:

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

When you next click on the sub-forum to view the new posts, an envelope will be displayed beside the thread where the new post was made as shown here:

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

When you click on the Thread that has the new post, this will automatically trigger the removal of the "Envelope" image.

When your done reading all new posts in the sub-forum, press the "Mark forum as read" link again as this will remove the "New Reply" image associated to the sub-forum on the main page.

On the main page which shows all sub-forums there is also a "Mark ALL forums as read" link, which as it suggests will mark all forums as read.

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Please Note: You need to be a Registered Member of the Australian X-Trail Forum in order to use this feature.

Excellent write-up Noel. Well done!

I haven't been aware of this very handy feature until recently too. hehehe

That is because I always depended on email notifications to guide me to new replies to existing posts, but the email notification did NOT include new posts, which this feature will cover nicely.

I would have gone bonkers trying to keep up if I hadn't discovered this early in the piece. It would be even better if the date of a post was near the top of each post, so especially for long posts you don't have to scroll down to the bottom of each before discovering whether it was submitted since you last checked. But don't get me wrong - its a great forum and well managed, thanks. David.

Hi Dave,

Excellent suggestion.

I'll play around with the settings and see if I can change that.

Guys: Please keep the suggestions flowing and we will ensure that the settings we can change are changed if needed.

Bad news am afraid Dave emoticon

We can't move the date of the post anywhere and Runboard support guys saying it can't be done (at the moment)

On the wish list this one goes as well.
