A/C unit sealing problem

A couple of weeks ago I took my X-Trail on a 4wd training course (well worth it, by the way). Plenty of water crossings, driving along a river and generally playing around in mud and ooze.

The car handled everything very well, but the next day there was a rather "gritty" sound when the motor was running. Intriguingly, it was louder when the air conditioner was off, and quieter when the AC was running.

The car was due for service last week anyway, so I mentioned it to the dealer. Turns out the AC unit is mounted quite low in the engine bay. It's supposed to be fully sealed, but in some cases the sealing hasn't been up to scratch.

Which was the case with mine - the AC ingested plenty of muddy water.

Good news is that it's a warrantiable item, and the AC's being replaced this week. But anyone who's planning on getting their car wet might want to head underneath with some silicon goo beforehand!
