Cam Sensor Fault code

Hello,

Have code p0340 - cam position sensor for my 2002 xtrail t30. When I bought the car it had some documents from last mechanic visit. Apparently the car stopped and had to be towed where NRMA replaced the cam/crank position sensors in August 2019.

Surely this is a bit early for another fail/faulty sensor? I asked my mechanic friend and he said could be a wiring issue.

Should I have an auto elec look at it?

Cheers

Re: Cam Sensor Fault code

Could be a wiring issue but could also be incorrect sensors. Get a set of genuine sensors from Nissan and make sure they are not swapped around when installed. They both look the same but there have been reports that there is some slight difference.

Re: Cam Sensor Fault code

Thanks for your reply Kev.

It's going into NRMA for a check. It's going to cost me $60, best case scenario it's the wires (which I think it is).

Another issue it could be (according to the mechanic) is the timing chain could be stretched and that's putting the timing out for the sensors to read the correct position of the cam. Which I don't think it would be... i've driven a car that had the crank gear almost 2 teeth out of alignment because the keyway on the gear was gone, so it was just holding on with friction. The car went but it had no power, used heaps of fuel and you could tell the engine wasn't working properly. That car had a belt.

He quoted 2.5k for the job to do the chain. I only paid $800 for the car...

The car has 330k kms on it. My plan was to drive it for 6 to 12 months until I got a car with less kms on it. But happy to do small repairs on it.

It's a shame because I'm pretty happy with how great the car is!
