T30 shaking while stopped on D

Hi everyone,
I have a T30 from 2006.

After I drove on the sand (and got stucked a couple of times), my xtrail has started to shake when stopped and on D. The same vibration doesn't happen when driving or when stopped with the gear on R or N. Did that happen to anyone? What do you think the problem could be?

Thanks!

Hi Frank,

I suggest you have your rear engine mount checked.
It is a common symptom of vibration when idling in D but not when driving.
They are a liquid filled mount and when old will tear under stress, releasing the fluid causing the engine to move more than normal at idle revs.
Usually good to have the front mount replaced at the same time since a failed rear mount will put more stress on the smaller front mount.

Re: T30 shaking while stopped on D

Rear engine mount. Had this happen on both T30 Xtrails I have owned after driving on sand and getting bogged. The vibrations were really violent at low revs but disappeared at higher revs.

As Revhead Kev said, the engine mount has oil inside it to reduce vibrations. When the mount gets old, it cracks and the oil leaks out. In both cases my mount was filled up with sand from getting bogged and that's what caused the horrible vibrations. If you cut the mount open after replacing it, a small mound of sand will come out!

It's an annoying job to replace this mount. You can do it yourself with some good tools - there's a guide on this forum how to do it. The issues I had when attempting to do it myself was trying to undo the bolt on the power steering rack which was completely stuck. I found a nice mechanic who helped me finish the job. His ratchet gun couldn't even get this bolt - it was so stuck. Had to use a 2 metre long breaking bar to get enough leverage. We then needed to drop the sub frame to make enough room to get the mount out. He only charged me $50, I went straight to buy him a carton of beer!

The second time I had this problem on another Xtrail I just went to get some quotes. Most mechanics quoted from $700 to $1000 to replace this. The best quote I got was from Nissan for $264 (I supplied the mount which I got from ebay for $80). Turns out they spent way longer replacing the mount than expected but they didn't charge me any more!
