2002 T30 radiator question

Hi guys

Got a leak in top of the original radiator (200k) manual
So bought one from repco over the weekend giving all correct car details to them .

Removed old one and replaced with new one but I noticed the new one had 2 small pipes at the bottom of the radiator which If I'm correct they are for a automatic X-Trail for cooling the automatic transmission

Questions

1, am i able to still use this radiator or will coolant leak out of the 2 pipes?

Or does the new radiator have a separate tank combined for transmission oil ?

2, where can I find a radiator bleeding procedure for my 2002 t30

I know I need to purchase genuine Nissan coolant but whats strange is nulon said that they sell a compatible one

Regards

Re: 2002 T30 radiator question

1. The extra 2 pipes should indeed be the automatic transmission oil cooler. As far as I know, this is just a closed pipe which carries the oil from the transmission, into the coldest part of the radiator at the bottom and back to the transmission, but I have not disconnected the hoses from my automatic transmission to know for sure.
To test it, leave the cap off the radiator and blow through one of the pipes. You should feel air coming out the other. Now if you block the othe pipe you shoud feel it is more difficult to blow through the pipe. This shows you it is a closed system independent of the main radiator water tank.

2. To bleed the radiator, there is a small plastic wingnut on the bottom passenger's side of the radiator. Undo this after removing the radiator cap to drain the water before undoing any hoses. There is a drain plug for the block but you won't need to remove this to drain the radiator.

3. NEVER, use anything but genuine Nissan coolant regardless of anyone saying theirs is compatible. Nissan will not guarantee anything engine related if they detect non-genuine coolant and even though your engine is 200k old, I would still keep the genuine stuff just to know it won't harm any internals.

Re: 2002 T30 radiator question

Hi kev

Thanks for the reply

Ok so repco said it's a separate tank and if the 2 pipes and there is 2 versions of these rads,
The one that the pipes are 70 mm apart can be used for both auto and manual cars.
Let's see. As it's already installed getting to those little pips down the bottom is going to be difficult to test by blowing through them so what I might do is just fill it up with water first and see.

When I mentioned bleeding, I think I didn't explain myself clearly
I know about the drain plug in the bottom of the tank.

I meant ,once I start to fill the radiator with genuine coolant, how do I get the air out as I know with my other cars there are bleed screws to let air out if the system while the engine is running and at operating temp.

It usually goes something like this

Cap off , car running, heater on full ,wait for thermo fans to come on and off then there should be a screw or bolt somewhere usually near either the thermostat housing or on the head

Hope I haven't rambled on

Regards

Re: 2002 T30 radiator question

Just leave the radiator cap off with the heater on full heat.
Watch for bubbles in the top of the radiator and the level going down and top up as needed.
It is also a good idea to have someone sit in the Xtrail watching the temp guage to make sure things don't overheat, or just keep a casual eye on it yourself from time to time.
