Rear Rock Collector - mysterious rattle solved !!!

Recently I had noticed a rattle when negotiating speedhumps and also when driving slowly over uneven surfaces. Having looked EVERYWHERE for this damn noise, my attention turned to the exhaust. Then I noticed a piece of gravel sticking out of the drain holes on the black rear protection bumper piece. (not sure of the official Nissan part name) Imagine my surprise when I removed this and found about 250 grams of gravel.

Tip for off-road users; check this rock collector on a regular basis.

Another good reason to have a towbar LOL emoticon

This piece gets removed when a towbar is fitted.

LOL!

I was going to ask him for a photo of it still attached the the back of the car so I knew where to look. I have a towbar so there's no point me looking for it. I wouldn't have heard any rocks rattling around anyway!

When my tow bar was fitted they just cut a slot and refitted it.The cutting instructions came with the towbar.

Re: Rear Rock Collector - mysterious rattle solved !!!

Dave,

The towbar assembly in the UK is different to the one we have here in Australia.

Some aftermarket towbars that have been fitted to an exy here also kept this plastic guard, which I see little use for.

I also believe that with the UK type of towbar, you have to cut an opening in the lower portion of the rear bumper. We don't have to do that with the genuine Nissan towbar here.

Re: Rear Rock Collector - mysterious rattle solved !!!

Hi.
I have a similar rattle. Metallic sound from rear but over to the right side when going over rough ground and bumps. I have tapped around the suspension with a rubber mallet but have found no source - loose parts. I have a tow bar fitted so I guess no reck collector. Can the rattle be from something else? Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks. PS New to Xtrails and the forum.

Rattle or clunking ?
Check all the bolts of your trailing arms and parallel arms for looseness and the bushes of the swaybar for wear.
