Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

Thank you for the info. Initially a slight wobble was only felt on the front left when going downhill at a low speed such as 60, smooth otherwise. It worked up to being a distinct wobble - same area - when taking off from a normal standstill start, then it would be smooth through all speeds up to cruising and nothing else. The 3rd more serious stage was a 'car rocking' front wobble when taking off uphill with some weight in the vehicle and when driving up hairpin bends and applying some acceleration after the curve. As mentioned, I'm sure that particular last mob have fully stressed it out during their investigations, they state they have placed genuine parts in it but have handed it back FAR worse than it ever was- with increased wobble when departing and rough wobble now with vibration in the steering wheel when driving at 85km. The NISSAN workshop put new control arms and 'reconditioned' drive shafts in a few back, the recent work is claimed to be genuine drive shafts. There's been a lot of head scratching over this yet it is a distinct location and sensation. My advice to anyone having any signs of this problem is: Make no presumptions, don't use a regular mechanic, get to an EXPERT!

Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

Guys,

I currently have the same wobble on takeoff. it is a whole car wobble rather than through the steering wheel.
I used to have a regular mechanic until i woke up to certain facts.

I currently service and work on the car on my own. This seems to be the only way i know what is actually done to the car. I only take it to a mechanic if i don't have the tools to perform the task.

To address the issue of worn or cracked bushes, this is a huge design flaw in this particular vehicle. The average distance travelled on a set of new bushes is on average 50K. It seems there should be a second stabilising link between the control arms and the chassis to reduce the brute force put onto the bushes. The T30 design has 2 stabilising links, for some reason one was removed when the design was updated in the T31?

I am quite sure there are members of this forum who would love to know how to eliminate the wobble their car makes.

I will do what I can to report back.

I will be conducting a near to complete bush change over. The only bushes i will not be changing are the front control arms as i have opted for the superpro nolathane bushes which are great value for money and are far superior to the stock ones.

cheers,
Tom

Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

Hi Tom,
I noticed while doing a full brake pad change that my front lower control arm rear bush is cracked as well. I haven't noticed any wobble, but I will soon be changing the tyres and I don't want to risk any premature wear. Did you fit the nolathane bushes yourself and did you get the spf3452k standard replacement kit? Thanks

Re:

Hi folks, it's my x trail's turn now.

Just did the 70k km service at Nissan dealer at Cleveland ,QLD and was informed about the cracked bushings and a slightly split CV boot at right hand side.

They quoted $1100 all replaced (!!!)

There's no urgency to do the job though according to the mechanic. Keep monitoring how the car runs and check again at next service.

I didn't jump up and throw my arms around as you good folks here have kept me alerted well ahead.

Still quite disappointed. The car has never done any serious off road or beach driving......

Cheers.

The split CV boot is urgent and should be done as soon as you can before all the grease spins out and the CV wears and the whole joint needs to be replaced.

Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

I recently had a local mechanic replace drivers side inner boot for $90.
This was while I was waiting for a replacement cv boot that I purchased on ebay but it was not going to arrive before I had to travel for an unanticipated family matter. I now have a spare boot which I will attempt to replace myself when left hand side inner boot needs replacing.
As Kev indicated I also believe you should get it replaced urgently. The quote you got from nissan for bushes and boot sounds excessively high so why not try a local mechanic just for the boot.
Anyway, those are my thoughts because after many arguments with nissan about what should or should not be done at various services I have discontinued using them.
That was my choice but I am extremely happy with a local mechanic who now services my vehicle for a lot cheaper than nissan and he guarantees his work. Your call

Cheers from Alice Springs. My exy has run perfectly for the last 3720km since my recent service and I still have a few thousand km ahead of me before I return home.

Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

After a full brake pad change in May last year and 160,000 k's (on the original set), I knew my front lower control arm rear bushes were cracked. After a trip to Stockton Beach and going up and down the dunes, and a recent day out on the Meryla fire trails, I started feeling a thud on the front LHS. There was no wobble, but moving off from a standstill it was noticeable. To easily check the bush, I found that if the car was on level ground with the handbrake on and transmission in Park, if I put my foot on the tread in front of the tyre and pushed firmly but quickly towards the back of the car, at least 25mm of movement was there. Also do it from the rear of the tyre and push forward. I bought 2 new front lower control arms with all new bushes and ball joints from ebay and installed them in around two and a half hours. The tools needed were a half inch drive 18 and 21mm socket, short half inch drive extension (2-3 inch), half inch drive breaker bar and ratchet, 18mm spanner, tension wrench, lever bar, hammer, hydraulic jack and stands. A cold chisel may be needed to gently spread the ball joint housing apart. I might just replace the rear bushes on the original control arms with Nolathane bushes for next time these ones crack. There's a youtube video that shows how to change the lower control arms, and if you have the tools and some know how, it's not too hard a job to do, with the trickiest part being lining up the ball joint back into the hub.

Re:

Dont forget to get a wheel alignment completed when you change the arms, slight difference in dimmension will put your toe out, the car wont pull but the tyres will get scrubbed.

Cheers
