T30 - Fuel pump problem?

Hi All,

Have a 2004 Auto Petrol X-Trail that has served me well so far.

Today I went for a drive up to Mt Tamborine, via Henry Cotton Drive (steep! 15% incline, lot's of warnings for trucks/buses not to use the road etc). Was driving along no probs, got to a steep incline and the car slowed considerably, maybe doing 20Km/hour and my foot was almost to the floor. Felt like there was just no power available.

Was a little concerned, but I did have 5 people in the car. Eventually it dropped back a gear or two and was doing 4500rpm before changing up a gear where it still felt like there was no power in it. Got to a small flat spot and it was ok again for roughly 20 secs.

Got to the next incline and same thing happened. Car was really struggling, engine sounded ok but just had no power in it at all. Was worried now and rightly so, noticed a side road which I turned into just at the same time the engine conked out. Bit scary when you lose power steering and I had to stand on the brakes to stop the car from rolling off with the family on-board.

Tried to start the car again but didn't get much out of it, it kicked over ok but wouldn't start. Left it a couple of minutes and tried again, all was good. Still had over 3/4 of that road to go so decided against it and came home. Trip home was ok, no further issues but no major steep hills either. Plenty of smaller hills and the car was fine.

Initial thoughts are a fuel pump. Car has 132K on it and pump hasn't been replaced before. Have only ever had to swap out the usual crank/cam sensors (roughly at 110k when I did that) and also recently swapped the radiator out as it through a big leak. No other issues with the car.

Have the mechanic coming to take a look but would be interested in any other opinions. Not much to go off I know, but any ideas appreciated.

How has your fuel consumption been lately ? Still around the 10L/100km or creeping up to 12 or more ?

We get around 410-460Km's out of a full tank (fuel gauge is all over the shop, so we rely on the trip setting which we reset every time we fill it up). Most driving is in urban areas, school runs, groceries, not many highway miles.

You thinking O2 sensor as well?

If your fuel consumption was increasing drastically like has then I was thinking timing chain stretched like mine is but your fuel usage seems about normal.

Maybe a dirty MAF.
Worth replacing the O2 sensor and cleaning the MAF first. Then do an idle relearn.

Re: T30 - Fuel pump problem?

Replaced the O2 sensor and tried the hill again, same issue. Replaced fuel pump and all good. Had a service at the same time and happy days.

For a week...

Some drongo not watching the road has braked way too late and caused a 4 car nose to tail pile up (we were car number three). Unfortunately my car is now a write-off. Insurance will cover bugger all and I just spent $300 on the service so even more annoyed emoticon

Gonna miss my T30 emoticon
