posticon Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Hi Guys,

I have managed to install a Snorkel kit on my Exy. I ordered it via ebay - Navara D40 to begin with but that did not fit at all. So I was able to swap it to a D22 (which fitted!) This came from OCAM Industries for $129au - They are based in Melbourne and Queensland emoticon

If you are part of the Nissan X-Trail Off-Road Down Under page on Facebook, then you would have seen what I did to get it on. If you are not part of the group, then you will need to join up.

Here is the link on what I did etc:

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

No Problems jalaski emoticon

So this is what I ended up doing. Apologies if you have already seen my documentation in a few FB groups.

First of all there was a lot of work involved. I used a Nissan Navara D22 snorkel kit from OCAM industries here in Australia. It was purchesed via ebay and they should be able to send to any country I am guessing. Do not use the Navara D40 snorkel kit on a T30 series 2 as it will not work.

1. Take the inner well out first roughly about 30 mins as there are lots of screws and little clips (you dont want to bust them!)

2. There will be a template that comes with the kit, but its useless as its for a Navara. We have Exy's so it wont line up. I just went slightly over the middle of the wheel arch towards the front of the Exy. You also do not want to hit the joints for the body or the wheel strut support...So measure and then know exactly where you want to line up the foot of the snorkel

3. I took the guard out and then drilled into the body. The benefit of taking the guard off is that you can easily line up the bolts for the snorkel and attach it firmly. It required 5 small holes for this to happen. The other is to make sure that you haven't damaged anything else! You don't want a defective car. and last of all to take the crap that is in the bottom of the guard - leaves, mud etc..

4. I had to grind back the box that holds the guard in place to fit the snorkel so that took some engineering decisions. Which means you can easily attach your filter hose.

5. I used a high quality air intake filter hose with professional clips which was flexible. It was $30 from a local auto shop (Autobarn) - Also make sure once you attach to your air box filter (I kept mine) that you silicone it! You don't want any leaks.

6. Then put the guard back on and all the clips and screws etc.. and you are all done.

You will know that it is sucking in air when you put your hand on the top of the snorkel head and hear it..Especially when you rev the car haha emoticon

You should also check on your temperature gauge - mine sits on just almost 1/4 of the dial...so I know its sealed right emoticon

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

BTW - I had a good mate that knew about cars especially 4x4's (He has a Toyota Hilux SR5 Dual cab with the works!) He is the one pictured and is not biased when it came to cars. He has always helped me when I needed something done - its pretty much helps me with my cars and I help him with his PC's (I am after all a Computer nerd :P)

And time wise it was about 4 - 5 hrs to get done. I must admit you DO NOT want to rush things as that's how mistakes are made..You can replace the Air filter unit with a inline filter pod system i.e. K&N branded, but I haven't gone down that path yet.

I would also put some type of rubber on the A pillar when attaching the bracket and seal it with some silicon.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

That's the idea jalalski emoticon

What I did forget to mention, is that on the guards support box where we grinded off some of the section - the most important thing was to remove all the unwanted steel shavings. As you dont want them to sit there rusting your car. So i sprayed it with a dose of killrust. Also do the other side of the hole in the inside of the engine bay.

When you attach the flexi pipe to the air filter box, the shape on the end of the air cleaner box is kinda oval where the flexi pipe is round. So what we did to get around that issue, was to grind an small empty fire extinguisher (as they are aluminium) and bend it to the correct shape of the air filter input and the other end fits perfectly to the flexi hose (76mm /3"). Everything was siliconed so there are no leaks. To do this you also need to remove the bottom air filter canister so you can see what you are doing properly.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4752/28083493629_a3b8904eed_b.jpg Bit hard to see but its siliconed.

And all my wiring looms have been cleaned up so its not in the way of anything emoticon

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Only because 'Silicone' is mentioned a LOT in your instructions, I have been warned to only use 'sensor safe' and 'petrol resistant' silicone for this task. I have first hand seen silicone in affected by petrol and can tell you....it's BAD! Turns to a soft crumbly jelly that goes through the whole fuel system and stuffs everything.

If you did use a 'safe' silicone, can you tell us what type/brand?

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

Hi Wiz,

The only silicon that I used was Selleys Roof & Gutter. Not sure about the safe version of silicon - i think they are all just as bad as each other ? My mate recommend to use that and some other guys on a Nissan group facebook page did as well.

I liked in particular as it mentioned this: Ideal for weather proofing caravans and truck bodies. Also liked that it was UV resistant. Here are the tech specs from there page:

*Excellent general purpose sealant. Will not attack zinc or cementitious surfaces.
*Forms a durable seal
*Does not shrink when drying
*UV resistant
*Low odour during application
*Non corrosive
*Remains flexible – will not shrink, crack, crumble or dry out
*Weather resistant
*25 Year guarantee – When used as directed within 12 months of purchase

So far so good.

Re: Xtrail Snorkel

For your own piece of mind, squeeze out a bit of that silicon, let it go off/set hard, then put it in a little jar of petrol for a few days. If it turns to jelly.....not 'safe' for petrol engines, especially the MAF sensor.
