Re: GPS navigation

G'day Everyone,
For those who own either the 'newer' and/or 'older' Garmin GPS units, "Full Coverage of Australia and New Zealand, Version 2019.10" is now available from the Garmin Express site for download. Meaning all Garmin GPS units with Free Lifetime Map Updates can be upgraded.

Say what? Yep, older units update to 2018.30 was literally only a few days ago, now, you've got update to 2019.10....which raises another interesting point. 2019.10, in 2018? Go figure.
Seems to me to be just like Woolies selling Easter eggs from the start of January.

Re: GPS navigation

Hello every one,
I have monitored this tread closely and correct me if i am wrong but it seams that you are all trying to update maps that you are using from 3rd party nav systems. unfortunately every nav system on the market currently issues their map updates based on licensed google information which is re formatted and marketed to your GPS unit through free lifetime updates or updates you need to pay for. Like it or not, Google sell all the map information to your providers at a cost.
This same information is available for FREE in the way of Android.
Have a look at replacing your standard car radio with an Android system.
Nissan made a brilliant radio system that most of you have currently installed in your cars but recent advances have made these obsolete. The days of having a GPS Nav system suctioned capped to your windscreen have long passed. Tom Tom and Navman are soon dead.
Recently i posted information on a Carjoying unit but there are many other manufactures that have compatible units on the market. All are worth reviewing.
All of these models that include Google Mags will give you latest maps info even if you are not in reception area. All of these maps can be updated free at the time of your travel, and not when your current provider decides to release the update.
I travel a lot and my Android system surpasses any car radio and 3rd party nav system on the market.
Consider Android!!

Re: GPS navigation

Firstly, yes, you are wrong emoticon
My GPS is a Garmin Zumo660 for car and off road motorcycle use in remote areas. I run 3 different maps on it and looking at a 4th. (Garmin City Navigator 3D, Garmin Topo and Shonky Topo, getting OzTopo). These maps do not get their data from Google. In fact OzTopo say their data is from: "Map Data Services, Geoscience Australia, RMS (NSW), PSMA & many others".

Andriod with Google maps does not have the resolution or topographic map quality 1:25,000, I need for off-road navigation on the bike or in the 4WD, and cannot load the Government overlays I need for my National Parks works. It would also require me to dowload all the map segments in the different resolutions I would need before I go as I am out of mobile cellular data range quite a lot. This is risky as if I dont get that right I could find myself 'mapless'. Tracks and routes are all Garmin GPX format as standard, not Google KMX which in my experience is a bit dodgy.

Andriod with Google maps has its uses, but off road remote areas is not one of them. I can't see Garmin 'windscreen' GPS units being replaced with Andriod devices and Google maps in remote areas with no reliable mobile data coverage where high map resolution is required.

Tablets, both IOS and Android, with MudMaps or OziExplorer GPS application, (+ external bluetooth GPS puck for high accuracy) and OzTopo maps is the 'go-to' product for most 4WD clubs. In dash units do not seem 'flexible' enough yet, but may in the future.

Personally, I dont like HEMA maps. Not high res enough. 1:250,000 sucks in a forest.

Re: GPS navigation

I have an older Garmin GPS (Nuvi 1350) which I attempted to update based on previous posts in this thread. My device has free lifetime updates.

I connected my garmin to my laptop and opened Garmin Express. My device was listed and showed that my software was up to date (versioin 6.30) and my maps were up to date (version 2018.10)

Based on the information in previous posts I rang Garmin Support Australia (ph: 1800 235 822). I asked the support tech if he could tell me what the latest free software and map versions were available for my device.

The support tech actually plugged a device into his own system and advised me that it showed that the latest software version was indeed 6.30 and the latest maps available for free download was also 2018.10....both of which I have.

So according to Garmin support I already have the latest free software and map versions.

Garmin Express did advise that there were map updates available but they had to be purchased.

I will stick to the freebies.

cheers

Re: GPS navigation

Sorry to hear about your problem Dave.
In our family we have my (newer) nuvi 2589, running software version 8.70, and my daughter's (older) nuvi 255W, running software version 7.80.
BOTH of these units were successfully updated to "Full Coverage of Australia and New Zealand, Version 2019.10" when I posted notice of the available updates, so I'm at a loss to understand how not all Garmins are 'updateable'.

Re: GPS navigation

I would recheck your information that a Nuvi 1350 has "Lifetime Maps".

"Garmin uses Whereis maps on the nuvi 1350"

I suspect these are not in the "Lifetime Map" update plans, and this persons experience is similar:

I bought this in 2011 to replace an old MioTech digiwalker... lifetime maps it said on the box. Sadly nothing but a lie.

I have used the GPS many times and love it as a GPS, but I recently tried to update the maps using the lifetime upgrade - didn't work. Contacted customer service, oh, no that's not compatible, you should've been told that when you registered the product, nope wasn't, well tough you have to buy maps... so I tried, buying the lifetime option, nothing, it refuses to accept maps... contact customer service, hello, no maps working, told oh no, that's not compatible with your device, let us refund you.... great, so tell me which maps I can actually use.... well that was 3 months ago and the tech and his/her supervisor are still "investigating" (read doing nothing) to tell me which maps I can actually buy.

Bit more digging may have revealed that it was a limited time promotion sticker on the box.....
https://www.garmin.com/au/NZLMU_FAQ ("LMU" = Lifetime Map Update)

Q: What are the valid purchase periods for the promotion?

A: The purchase period is from 1st March 2012 – 5pm on 31st December 2012. Claims made with purchases dated outside of this purchase period will be deemed invalid and ineligible for the free update.

Q: Once I’ve bought my product within the valid purchase period, how long do I have to enter the promotion and receive the update?

A: Entries close at 5pm on the 31st January 2012. Claims received after this date will be deemed invalid and ineligible for the free update.

I have two old Garmin GPS, a Nuvi 765 and a Zumo 550. Both were purchased in 2007. The Nuvi 760 came with lifetime maps and I purchased the lifetime map option for the Zumo 550. I have had no problems updating them in the time that I have owned them. They are both great GPS.

Cheers

John

Re: GPS navigation

I sent an online enquiry to Garmin Support on 7 February asking them to explain why other Garmin users have what appear to be more recent map updates than what I have been able to download. I included in the online enquiry that verbal communications with a Garmin support operator indicated that I already had the latest map and software versions for my Nuvi 1350.

The online query page on the web stated that responses were provided within 24 hours for most queries but up to 3 business days for more extensive queries. I wonder how hard it is for them to answer my query?

I have had no reply as yet so I am waiting till Tuesday 13 Feb before I follow up my enquiry if no response.

Stay tuned.................

cheers and have a great weekend.

Re: GPS navigation

OK, I just spent an hour on the phone to Garmin Support, as no map updates at all were showing for my Zumo 660.

Apparently about a year ago Garmin sent out an 'Automated email' to all registered users advising them that Map Updates for certain model GPS units will be "Discontinued" as Garmin has ceased the contract with the map supplier.

You cannot even get "old" map updates. Whatever is on your device right now, is what you are stuck with for life.

When I started talking about "In Writing" and a complaint to the ACCC, including court action to refund the full cost in court plus court costs (The Zumo cost me nearly $800 just 4 years ago) I was invited to apply for a refund through Garmin but "The outcome cannot be guaranteed".

I am waiting for the email from Garmin so I have all this in writing as without it, I don't have much of a case. And I will also claim the full purchase price of the GPS and the TWO mounts I purchased as they are now useless too.

Very "NOT HAPPY" Garmin!
