Re: T30 stuck in 2nd gear
Errg, could be in Limp mode then if you don't know that the 'Check Engine' light isn't on.
You say you haven't been able to get a scanner connected? You need a VAG-COM cable for the T30 X-Trail. You can't just plug a OBD-II scanner into the port. I was lucky that the one for my BMW bike worked. It's this one, which you can get anywhere. Just search for "VAG-COM KKL 409.1".
And then Tom's NDSII Software is worth the price, or it was for me. I coded two keys to the car which the Locksmith wanted $160 EACH. Tom's software was less than half the price of ONE key!
I can't recommend a Bluetooth/WiFi wireless solution with a tablet or phone. I could only get all this working with a mini eePC laptop and the USB VAG-COM cable.
Or pay a dealer/workshop their minimum diagnostic fee to read the codes for you? Cost me $66 at the dealer before I got the software sorted for myself. Asked for a print out on paper so I had all the info. They didn't know how, so they just "Print Screen" the computer screen, all 15 screens! (I think they printed it twice as there is a lot of duplicate info?)

Re: T30 stuck in 2nd gear
Drop the oil, drop the pan, look for metal on the magnetic oil drain plug and broken metal/plastic in the bottom of the pan. If there's just 'grey paste', that's not great, but not a sign of anything majorly broken, just wear.
Also, what colour is the fluid? Should be a burgundy red/brown? Anything dark brown or black, needs changing, and a good place to start.
If there's no "bits" then it means that the fundamentals of the transmission are OK, and it is most likely a solenoid/valve/pump issue. So while something might be 'faulty' it's not "broken", if you get what I mean. It's just not working as it is supposed to due to a faulty component. As most of these components are electrically operated, they should throw a code in the TCU (Transmission Control Unit). The last car I worked on with very modern CVT threw a code even when the fluid pressure was "Out of Range" as it had 3 sensors along the fluid path that constantly measured the transmission fluid pressure. What is in a Nissan/Jatco 2005-ish year transmission, I don't know yet.

Re: T30 stuck in 2nd gear
So this is an Auto, correct ?
How many kms has the Xtrail done ?
If you manually shift it into 2nd does it still seem to lose power going up the same hill or only if it kicks back from drive ?
