M9R Turbo Failure

Hi Guys and Gals,

Has anyone had a turbo replaced yet or had issues. On a recent trip away our 2009 TL experienced an issue and I believe (through online research) a turbo turbine fin/vane has failed. The compressor fins look fine, haven't gotten to the turbine side of the turbo yet. We now have a high pitched air raid siren for a turbo and slight hesitation under hard acceleration.

Fuel economy is fine and other than the noise no real drama. I had the car checked when we were away by the nearest Nissan dealer (200km round trip mind you) and he said not to panic as it wouldn't get worse and he was sure it was the turbo. He said to see my local dealer when we returned home. Thought I'd ask the question here before we head in on Friday.

We have owned this from new, 100% local dealer serviced and approx. 87K k's on the clock. Had the 100,000K service done 2 days before we left for the trip. HELP!

Dave

Re: M9R Turbo Failure

Bad luck about your turbo. Mines 74000 km old in my 2011 TL Auto but no issues as yet.

There are turbo repair experts in Australia that might work out a little cheaper than going back to Nissan. Try http://www.turboaustralia.com.au

I'm wondering whether one of the variable geometry vanes might have either failed or is not functioning properly. If you're not getting a MIL light for insufficient turbo boost pressure then the turbo must be supplying some amount of charge air. But maybe it's not working to full spec.

Replacement turbochargers, if it comes to that, actually aren't as expensive as you might think. The one you're looking for is a Garrett GTA15V and I've seen them via the internet for around $1000. But you may well find your turbo is repairable. The address above has a queries form in the repair section that might be of use.

Good luck.

Re: M9R Turbo Failure

Thanks for the reply,

The car is with My Nissan dealer as we speak. They are removing the turbo Monday and putting a case forward to Nissan for premature failure. No matter how you look at it Either the dealer of Nissan are liable under the Statutory Rights Law and what one would normally expect a car/engine/turbo should last.

Like I said the car is pretty low K's well looked after and a full 1 dealer service history. I made it clear I'm not prepared to pay a cent and Nissan or the dealer need to come up with a repair.....wishful thinking I know but that's the way it is.

The turbo Model is GTA1549LV too and the cheapest I've found new is $1300. I'm not prepared to pay that when it shouldn't have failed in the first place. I'm more than capable of doing the job myself being a HD diesel mechanic, but I'm not doing it if I shouldn't have to.

I've paid a fortune for servicing the last 5 or so years so. I've been looked after in the past with this dealer and following this principle and servicing schedule with other vehicles and I've been lucky to have issues sorted with little fuss even well outside warranty. Statutory Rights don't expire when the warranty does and most extended warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on and simple mirror your Legal rights anyway.

Re:

Very disappointing to hear. Low km for age is on your side. You are right, even out of warranty, this should be covered. 87,000km is nothing for a diesel.

Re:

I did the caves-to-caves track this weekend. Heading back Jenolan Caves this afternoon, i get a blinking cruise 'set' light about 30kms out of Goulburn... Couldn't get power... tried the usual resets (power off etc.) and still nothing. But we were able to get the car going until about 2500rpm in each gear.

Figured out it was the turbo not spooling as we still had drive (got up to 80km/h using 6th and some hills) and made it to Goulburn. 2kms before the dealership, MIL came up.

No idea whats going on, but I left it at the dealers, and will go back tomorrow morning to deal with it in Goulburn (luckily I'm working there tomorrow)...

Wondering if its a new turbo... or have i blown a hose (again).

Re:

There can be many causes of the high pitch squeal from a turbo, most of them involving fingers or gear in them that should not have been. If you have not been in it from new, it maybe mechanics dropping crap in it getting sucked through bending bits on the way, the only one to take it off is the mechanic - if so explain this to them, good luck if not sorted by now
