Re: 'hunting' idle
I hope this is related, but until I find a 2011-2013 T31 TL auto diesel to buy, I thought I'd buy a cheap T30 for now. I went to look at one on the weekend, and after it was warmed up, it started revving high and sorta "hunting" by dropping the revs, then revving high again. Bit like 'cutting out' to lower the revs every 15 seconds, but consistently revving 1700-2000rpm.
Now here's where it gets interesting....
It only did it in Park & Neutral...and when hot...which is why the owner never discovered it. (Who leaves their car idling in Park or Neutral when hot? You park the car and turn it off.)
So in Drive, Reverse, or any gear, it idles normally @900rpm. The issue is only present when hot, in Park or Neutral! Driving the vehicle showed no signs of anything abnormal, as long as you have it in Drive, or Reverse. I suspect if you flipped it into Neutral when stopped at the lights the issue would show, but then who does that often either?
At first I suspected a temperature sensor, but after reading all of this, I can't help think that if it doesn't do it in Drive or Reverse when the engine is under load, it has to be ECU/electrical/Idle settings?
I've suggested he try the idle re-learn procedure, or take it back to the mechanic that last worked on it.
I found out the car had recently had the exhaust manifold replaced on it due to the original cracking. I worry that if the manifold came complete with CAT and O2 sensor, then even though the CAT recall was done, the used part they installed might NOT be the 'recall' part, but an old one that missed the recall. But either way, if the ECU had 'learnt' an idle setting with a cracked manifold that is no longer present, wouldn't it also re-learn with the fixed one?
In my 'other' world we call this "adaption tables", and we reset the adaption tables every time we do any significant work, like valve clearances, new air filters, replacing O2 sensors, etc.

Re: FLARING AT IDLE 1700-2500 RPM.
Hi Wiz,
Yes, doing the idle relearn would certainly be the first thing to do. This would also need the pedal released relearn to be done first with the Xtrail warmed up with aircon and lights off (no extra load).
Then re-evaluate the condition.

Hi Wiz, I have recently had this issue that is not fixed. I had my 05 TI services by my local mechanic and now I noticed that the idle flares between 1500 to 2000 when in park. It also seems the auto transmission seem to bump a little if you take your foot off the accelerator as well. I took it back to the mechanic and he is unsure why. He did clean the throttle body and replaced the plugs which he said were pinging badly. I wonder if this means the idle had fixed in a poorly tuned state. None of these issues was apparent before the service. Should I get the idle reset as a matter of course?
