Is lack of use a problem for 4wd systems?

I am about to give my t30 it's first real test as a 4wd (Fraser Island). I have owned it a year and a half and have taken it down a few bush tracks in auto mode but never anything I couldn't have managed in 2wd. Previous to my owning it I am highly doubtful if was ever put into either 4wd mode. I owned a L series Subaru with a push button 4wd switch years ago and had the same concern then, which is... Do 4wd systems suffer from disuse or should it be ready to go?

It's often a good idea to engage 4WD at least once every 4-6 weeks or so weeks to keep everything lubricated, but it will not cause catastrophic breakages if you don't.

I honestly don;t think you will have any issues if the X-Trail is in otherwise good condition and been serviced etc.

As a precaution - if you are worried - if it hasn't been used for 18mths then a quick pre-trip check is worthwhile.
If you are heading to Fraser from Rainbow / Inskip - you will have a bit of an opportunity to test the system on the access road and beach before you get on the barge - so go for a bit of a run up the beach and back and then just check underneath for any leaks from the seals before you get on the barge.

I have owned probably 15 or so different 4WD's since my first in 1985 and never have any issues with 'lack of 4WD engagement" as you mention.. you will be fine...

Re: Is lack of use a problem for 4wd systems?

I have successfully toured Fraser Island in a T31 and never used 4WD lock.

The only time that I have used 4WD lock was to test it out on a Sand Driving course prior to my Fraser Island trip. It was the only time that I actually got bogged n the sand. Why??

Well I was in fairly soft sand on Stockton Beach and in auto so decided to see whether there was any noticeable difference to the steering etc in 4WD lock. I switched to 4WD lock and continued on and increased speed as the sand got firmer.....then my exy came to a stop rather quickly and I had to figure out what went wrong. I found out that at about 40kmh the transmission electronics will disengage 4WD lock automatically but return the transmission to 2WD mode.....not Auto mode.
After switching back to auto I was able to move on with no further problems. A lesson learnt.

I believe the T30 does the same.. ie will change to 2WD from 4WD lock if speed increases to about 40kmh.

I don't believe that you will need to use 4WD lock on Fraser but if you do just be aware of above.

Cheers and have a great trip

Excellent answers thank you both, she is in nice condition for a t30 and I'm pretty confident. Not intending to try any of the more extreme tracks just charge up the beach and visit whatever lakes are accessible without clearance. Most worried about getting off the barge and burying her in front of everyone but if I have ever learned anything about serious off roaders... the only thing they like better than giving you a disdainful look for getting bogged in your city car is proving their superiority by pulling you out. CaptK, if I do have a test and look for leaks would I look around the centre diff?

Re:

if checking for leaks - check everywhere whilst you are underneath it.. (not just trans / diff / axles/ hubs etc)
Always a good idea to check all the usual places just in case you can spot something before it gets out of hand. Things like Cam/Crank/Rear Main/Cam covers/Sump/Powersteering etc will give you a heads up for future maintenance that may be required. Whilst not all of those seals will be visible - there may be tell tail signs of fluids leaking down along the block or sump etc
