Re:

I've just done the lower front and the rear set after my wanderings last year.
The only symptom that anything was wrong, was a knocking noise in the back drives side whenever I hit a pothole.

Nissan quoted $900 alone for the rear set of after market bushes or $1800 for the control arms with bushes by Nissan and they didn't bother to check the front or any other suspension parts. This was after they couldn't pin point the noise and my brother found it for me.

I took it to a trusted local suspension shop who did a complete check. Front lower bushes and rear bushes all needing doing. Especially the rear as it was broken. So no idea how any half decent mechanic couldn't find what was wrong is beyond me.
But $850 later for all those parts installed locally in a couple of hours one morning.

Re:

I'm actually astonished that any suspension parts in my exy could go bust when the car is only being driven in the suburbs and only been off-road once. It just doesn't make any sense. I'm not getting any knocking sounds or anything wrong with the handling. Is there a way I can jack up the car and inspect those control arms myself? What do they look like?

Re:

You should easily be able to see them from sliding under a little bit.
Aluminium molded sections with rubber grommet in the end (they are punch in type) With a pinion inside the grommet going to a support. The grommet is the actual bush.

Re:

Same here. Got a service at a Nissan dealer late last year and was told my battery was getting iffy, and control arms should be looked at before too long to avoid wearing out the front tyres.

Kmart tested and replaced my battery for nix (3 year warranty came in handy), so maybe there really is an issue with the control arm bushes.

I've barely been off road, and have approx 60,000kms. Not what I expected for a vehicle that is generally quite robust.

Re:

The bushes themselves are the very soft oil filled type in the original control arm, the replacement ones are solid rubber.
So even a few hard potholes might cause problems.

I'd go to an independent suspension place and get a free check.

Re:

Dumb question(s)...is it a big job to remove the control arms, or can the bushes the replaced in situ?

Does the car need to be put up on a hoist, or are stands sufficient?

Re:

I replaced the front control arms on the T31 a couple of weeks ago.

Rear bush was cracked on both sides, car has ~120kkm. I bought two replacement lower control arms from veale, retail around $120 per side. They come complete with the two inner bushes and the outer ball joint.

The old ball joint was easily moved by hand (although no play was felt), the new ball joint was almost impossible to move by hand.

I did it quite easily by jacking up front and supporting on chassis stands. started by inserting the rear bush bolt, then ball joint into the knuckle, then jacked up the hub to help line up the two bolts on the front bush.

A bit of a pain to get them to line up, second one was much easier. Easily doable in 3-4 hours, could do it in 1-2hours next round.

Would obviously be easier on a hoist.

If you dont have a press, getting an entire arm is much easier and probably cheaper if you had to pay to get the bushes pressed, and this way you get all three joints new!

Cheers

Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

I have problems with my 2008 xtrail front end wobble, first in 2015 when it received a new passenger side CV at a local mechanic - front steering was later all overhauled at a Nissan centre for many $$$, some reconditioned parts, some new bits. Last October 2017 the wobble came back immediately after the same CV was replaced again - redid the work for me due to thinking they had a dud part but the problem stayed. So, because it was a worry to drive, I took it to an NRMA center and asked them to advise me what was causing the problem again & what the solution might be - I gave them lots of details on all the previous work performed. Now 9 weeks later they have handed the car back and I actually think the wobble is now even worse! They say they have tried everything and can't tell me what it is, they have fitted new parts and not charged me for anything. Seems there may have been xtrail recalls on wobble issues in Europe and I'm about to look into them a bit more. I was thinking that if NRMA can't tell me - who can? So here I am in the forum to see what topics there are on weird front ends. emoticon

Re: T31 lower control arm bushes.

Read this
Not all driveshafts are compatable with Xtrail
Yes it was written for my T30 but it would not surprise me if the same held true for the T31.

My suggestion is to have NRMA or the mechanic confirm only reconditioned or new GENUINE NISSAN driveshafts or CV's were used as a replacement.

One question though...at what speeds does the wobble appear ?
