posticon Re: T31 S5 stereo LCD going black in heat

Update:

It is not ambient temperature that causes the fading.
It is the heat generated by the unit!
It fades over a period of about an hour, or less, simply be being energised.

Why so hot? Do stereos usually get hot? It could only be a transformer or amplifier, but its only 12V fer pitys sake?? emoticon

Re: T31 S5 stereo LCD going black in heat

Update;

The LCD issue is a very common issue and it is not limited to the X-trails.
I have heard many people complaining of this problem.

Unfortunately there are many theories as to why this happens and all could be true.

When I purchased my 2012 exy in 2015 the stock stereo was not displaying correctly already. It was the first thing I noticed.
When I queried the dealer, they advised me they would give me a replacement, I was fortunate enough to haggle another $300 off the price and i would sort out my own stereo.

The suggestion was given to me that the heat dissipation of the stock unit was quite low/bad and over time this caused and adverse effect on the units LCD. How true this is I can't say.

Re: T31 S5 stereo LCD going black in heat

I have the same issue in my 2012 model. I was out last night, a cool (12 degree) night. Left to drive home with full display; after about 20 minutes it was gone, totally. I bought the vehicle privately 6 weeks ago, and this is the only issue with it. I love the car; can forgive this quirk if I have to, but I wonder is there technical info available on removing the unit without damage? I read elsewhere that someone had success by cleaning the contacts between the display and head unit.

Re:

I really wish there was an economical way of fixing the problem, so as to keep it original. From some posts I've seen, replacement units don't always keep the steering wheel functions, which is not ideal.
The offending LCD unit (probably the whole head unit) is reported to be by Daewoo, which makes me wonder whether Nissan sourced them from different suppliers which would explain why not everyone has this issue.

My Xtrail T31 2012 Stereo too has an LCD display that is terribly dim and I can barely see anything. Any tips on how to search for a replacement? I searched on Ebay and Gumtree.

Hello. I have in the past found a link for a replacement LCD screen, butI've since changed computers and don't have the link now. If that's what you're after I'll try and dig it out. 12 or 18 months ago ago it was 100+ dollars.

Re: T31 S5 stereo LCD going black in heat

I recently bought a replacement on AliExpress (AliBaba) for approx. $60 delivered. It works beautifully now, a straightforward changeover and now for the first time in the 3 years I've owned the vehicle I can read the settings on the screen at any time, not just for the first 20 minutes! A Google search:

Thanks for the update Arwie.
Please share the item description (not the AliExpress link) so others can search AliExpress for it if they wish.
Also, how easy was it to change ? A quick description of what is needed to be done would also be very helpful for other members.
