Replace Standard Headunit in Xtrail 2013 T31 with Awesome Joying Smart Radio

Hello everyone,
I love my Xtrail but have always been disapointed with the standard head unit so i decided to perform an upgrade.
I chose to install a 10.1 inch head unit from Joying.
See below link.
They have an Australian and Chinese stocked site. The Australian site did not show this unit. I would recommend to purchase from China and wait the extra time for delivery. 10 days total.

https://www.carjoying.com/head-unit/universal-car-head-units/10-1-single-din/joying-automotive-latest-2gb-multimedia-10-1-inch-big-touchscreen-single-din-car-radio-navigator-new-developed-android-5-1-1-lollipop-intel-sofia-3gr-os-fm-am-rds-entertainment-system-for-u.html

should the link not work then navigate to single din head 10.1" units in
https://www.carjoying.com

When choosing the right unit there are 3 things to take into consideration.
Processing power, Ram and Rom. The higher all these are, then the more responsive the unit will be. There's nothing worse than pressing a button and waiting for the function to load. The above seemed to have the highest of these compared to their other models so this was my choice of unit.
I installed this 4 days ago and am still learning only a quarter of what it is capable of. It is an Android based operating system. The best way to explain it is to imagine a smart phone only much smarter and much larger with extra features for driving. It will do everything an Android phone will do plus has Radio, reverse cam, dash cam and Gps. What it does not have, you can always download as an app from Google play. I am in no way connected with the company "Joying" but will say this is the most awesome thing I have had in years. They have a very good support forum and are quick to answer questions. please note, They are not real familar with our Xtrail and first told me to but the 2 din really small unit and they advised me to buy the reverse camera as my existing installed camera would not work. I hope my below video will help anybody considering making a change.

So after having it for a little while how's it all going??

I'm very interested in getting one for my T31. Only thing that's really stopping me is the fact that I may lose functionality from my Avm (surround) cameras!

Also is it possible to use the existing GPS Antenna and the existing Microphone that's built in or do you reckon I will have to use the joying ones?

I read in another thread on this forum that the surround camera processor may be a separate unit that feeds the combined signal from all the cameras into tbe one video input of the head unit?

That's what I'd hoped for but when I pulled her apart, there was a wiring loom that seemed to have all camera + power wires so I'm guessing the processing unit was in the old head unit. I found a video processor sold by stinger but it's a tad expensive!

Re: Replace Standard Headunit in Xtrail 2013 T31 with Awesome Joying Smart Radio

Ok,
Ive had it in for a while now and its still going great. It will be interesting how it handles the up coming summer heat. I'll let you know how that goes.

I do have one regret. I wired in the existing factory camera purely to avoid having to change the camera over. The old reverse camera displayed the image on my revision mirror. It was a very small screen and looked clear to me at the time. It wasn't until it was displayed on the much larger screen that the resolution on the old camera was shown as very poor. I have swapped the camera to the one purchased with the head unit and the difference is clearly noticeable.

I did try to get a USB dash cam which I already owned to work with the new head unit but no good. Would not detect that it was there no matter what I tried. When I have a little more money I may look at purchasing the recommended Joying dash cam but do I need the head unit to display what I'm already looking at and will it take processing speed away??

Re: Replace Standard Headunit in Xtrail 2013 T31 with Awesome Joying Smart Radio

hi all,
I've been away for a while but back now.

Just reading through the post which is very interesting.

I've had a 10.2 inch android stereo since september 2016 and it held it's ground with the aussie heat very well.
The best part is that the unit is plug and play.
One down side was the built in mic for calling as people found it hard to hear me.
Again this was fixed with an app download for the volume settings.

I have just decided to upgrade to a newer more power full unit which also has dab+ all for only $400 delivered.

The only thing i would love to know from the members is for those of you who have surround cams,is it one cable only or is a seperate processor required?

Cheers
Tom

Re: Replace Standard Headunit in Xtrail 2013 T31 with Awesome Joying Smart Radio

Very nice! I was going to buy the extra antenna so I could use Digital radio. Maybe one day!

I've done a bit of research into the all around cameras, still have to do some more, but by the looks of it, to get it to work, I don't think there is a plug and play option.I found that you need a separate video processing unit (something like Stinger PACVS41 but i think it's quite expensive) and then you'll need to sort out which wire is which and connect it accordingly. I'm hoping to find a cheaper option out there somewhere!

The only (very annoying) problem I have with the joying 10in is that when listening to my bluetooth audio, the connection constantly disconnects on me. I've emailed them twice but they still haven't found a solution. Very frustrating.

Ryan,

I believe it may be simpler than we all think.

The supplier that supplied me my new unit (Friday) has the option for a surround camera setup.
He is from QZ Inernational.

I have sent him the query about how it all works.

Will update as soon as I receive the reply.

cheers,
Tom

Re:

Looking forward to hearing about the surround camera integration Tom and Ryan. If successful id like to give it a go as well. Tom, you mentioned you were about to upgrade to a more powerful unit that had DAB+. You may find this new unit also has the external mic and cables with it. Works great. Mine has the DAB which unfortunately is not broadcasted in my Newcastle area. Recently I drove into Sydney area and found some interesting results. My DAB is the USB module add on with the antenna wire and magnetic antenna connection coming off the module. When I tried a scan at Hornsby I couldn't get a signal. Seemed strange to me considering I was apparently in an area with supposed reception. When I pulled over to troubleshoot the problem I came up with these results. The standard magnetic antenna and connecting wire gave me no results sitting at the end of the M1 freeway at Hornsby with the antenna sitting on top of my dash inside the car. When I moved the antenna outside and stuck it to the roof I instantly got 3 out of 5 bars and the reception was perfect. When i was in the center of Sydney i had similar results, Move the antenna back inside and reception dropped to very poor with intermittent stops. My conclusion was if I was to rely solely on DAB I would need to have an external antenna wired permanently to this module. As the DAB is controlled through the DAB app and not the normal radio button I also found I could not change channel through my steering wheel and could not store presets. I had to select each channel manually on the touch screen. But the plus side was the amount of channels that were accessible was around 4 times that of FM radio and the head unit also displayed station information and adds.

Re: Replace Standard Headunit in Xtrail 2013 T31 with Awesome Joying Smart Radio

hi Guys,

Unfortunately the supplier has come up short with the answer regarding surround camera integration.

xJeff,
You're not wrong about the DAB only being able to be channel swapped via the touch screen.
Not so clever but still a great function.

The antenna I use is similar to the one supplied by major stereo brands. ie, Pioneer, Kenwood etc.
It is a window mount unit which generally gets good reception, but it isn't perfect by any means.
As an average i'd say it works 80% of the time.

I am in the process of ordering a new larger similar type antenna to see if there is any improvement in reception.

Also would be interested to know if anyone in Adelaide has the surround camera system and are willing to poke around in their to confirm the plug used for the camera system.

Cheers
Tom
