Re: X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? Other??

update on starting problem. car finally gave up completely unable to start, replaced cam, crank sensors still the same. towed to mechanics, coolant in 3 cylinders and oil trace in one.
spark plugs (platinum) corroded.changed plugs started instantly.
Compression test ok. coolant pressure test (cold) ok.

seems it may be head or head gasket under heated conditions.
motor has done 204,000 kms purrs like a kitten when running.

not sure to replace head or complete motor at this stage.

comments welcome

Re: X-trail starting problems. MAF? COIL? Other??

why don't you do a compression test when the car gets hot? Before you spend $$$. In my opinion, if you're having a gasket problem, then it should show up on a compression test - hot or cold. If it showed up that you had a compression leak at higher temperatures, would re-torqueing, or at least checking the torque settings on the head bolts maybe clamp it down a smidge? Just some thoughts.

Also, if you go as far as a motor or head rebuild, be sure to have the timing chain and tensioner replaced, as these seem to be a weak point on the x-trail. I think there are uprated timing chain kits that you could look into and read about in this forum.

Thank you yes Ive been thinking the same about retorque of head bolts and hot compression test as well.

Also considering adding bars leaks to radiator as a temporary fix as it seems a very small leak.
but it has only taken less than 6 months to wreck platinum spark plugs.

Also while the engine is being done I agree you should do all you can at the same time.

Currently considering buying low km motor and rebuilding mine at leisure as I can do a lot of the work myself
