Re:

I have had a fair amount of interest in this subject since acquiring my diesel Xy in 2014. A search of this site http://www.oilspecifications.org/acea.php

indicates that the only difference between ACEA C3 and ACEA C4 specs is that C4 is a lower SAPS (low Sulfated Ash, Phosphorus-sulfur). Basically C3 and C4 are very similar, Here are the specs from the same website.

" ACEA C3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines, with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life. Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

ACEA C4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low Saps oil with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life. Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
"

As can be seen C4 ismore suited the engines fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters and Three way Catalytic Convertors, though I'm unsure if the earlier diesel Xy's and particularly the later models have the three way convertors.

For the sake of peace of mind, I think that all M9R diesel owners should seriously consider the use of C4 over C3 oils. The cost of the Penrite C4 is very price competitive with the lesser grade C3 of other oil manufacturers and it is Australian made and owned also. Autobarn sell 5 litre packs of the C4 for approximately $56.00, which is cheap as it is a full synthetic oil also. Go and support a great Aussie oil manufacturer too.

Re: Re:

Nissan changed specification on certain T31 M9R engine Exy's to C4 back in 2013, but not for all. The C4 oil specification specifically relates to a type of DPF. (The T31 has 2 different DPF types)

The C4 spec only applies to a certain number of vehicles made between 2012 & 2014. The only way to check which oil applies to your vehicle is to call Nissan with your VIN.

Castrol developed the C4 oil for Nissan and for a period it was only available from Nissan directly.

It's now available under the EDGE range as EDGE - C4 0W30

PENRITE'S C4 oil is the ENVIRO+ 0W30

BOTH of these oils can be bought in 20lt drums which are generally cheaper per lt than buying in 5lt bottles.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

May be cheaper in the drum but what is the shelf life ?
At 20 litres and less than 5 litres/oil change every 6 months, the oil would have to last for 2 years in a drum partially exposed to air.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Kev,
According to Penrites website regarding shelf life of oils it states -

Quote
"The performance properties of liquid lubricants (oils) will remain intact for many years provided they have been in protected storage and not exposed to severe high/low temperature cycles.
Generally, the simpler the oil formulation, the longer the oil will remain satisfactory. The old ‘cool dry place’ term certainly applies when storing oil products."
End quote.

Also when the oil and filter (always) in my M9R engine is changed, It uses about 7.5 litres of oil. To minimise oils exposure to air, I would ensure the cap is always replaced tightly on any oil container.

Charlie,
You said in your last post -

"Nissan changed specification on certain T31 M9R engine Exy's to C4 back in 2013, but not for all. The C4 oil specification specifically relates to a type of DPF. (The T31 has 2 different DPF types)"

Can you supply the source of this information? Thanks.

Re:

The genuine Nissan diesel oil is in fact Shell. When the diesel first came out here in Australia Shell didn't have the Nissan packaging ready in time, so dealers would use Shell oil packaging. This has now changed and the Shell oil is packaged in a Genuine Nissan packaging and probably sold for much more than Shell would sell it for.

This may have changed Jalalski

It could be a country by country contract for each oil supplier to each dealership.

Here in New Zealand I googled who supplied Nissan branded oil and the answer came back as "Total oil" I purchased from them and left my details at the parts people incase of issue such as needing a new DPF, as then I can blame them as they supplied the oil. It was cheaper than oil from Repco or Supercheap as well
