Problem with 16" on T31

Got some 2nd hand (but new) 16" Suzuki Vitara rims for the xtrail to replace the stock 17s.
Like these:
http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTE5NVgxNjAw/z/bkEAAOSwUuFWyt3E/$_20.JPG
They have virtually brand new Dueller 225 70 16s. The guy drove them from the dealer to put 17s on.
By all reports, these should fit fine, and at first everything seemed good. The wheels rotated freely by hand and reversing there was no rubbing at full lock.

But before I got out the driveway, it sounded like the wheels were all loose.
Stopped but everything was good. Driving very slowly this kept on, only (mostly) stopping when I lightly braked.

Took the fronts off and checked for rubbing, but couldn't find any signs.
Drove again and the rears also made the same noise, just a little less.
Took them off and checked but also nothing.

Any ideas on whats up?

Re:

What year model was the Vitara these were taken off from? Only the 2005 and up have the matching PCD with the X-Trail.

Re:

I didn't ask, but I'm assuming any different PCD would be different enough that they wouldn't fit at all?
When I put them on they went on/off as easy as the stock wheels. They seemed to seat just fine.

The tires still have some of the hairs from the mould, and the rims look brand new, would be very surprised if they'd been sitting there for over a decade.

Since the noise mostly stops when I brake lightly, I was thinking something is touching the calliper, but I can't find any sign of rubbing on them, or the wheel. Also makes the noise on the rear where the callipers are much smaller.

The last thing I can think of is maybe the centre hole on the rim is slightly smaller, and not seated over the hub properly. I can't work the wheel loose on the jack, but the weight of the car would easily be enough. Still doesn't quite explain why it mostly goes away when I brake...

Re:

They might go on and come off easily but if there any variation in the PCD it will cause problems. They'd have to be identical for them to fit correctly. The centre bore/hole is one of the PCD measurements.

Also check that the wheels haven't got any spacers attached to them, as the previous owner might have been using on a different car all together.

Re:

Ok, figured it out...

The centre bore isn't part of, or related to the PCD, it's a separate number altogether.
PCD on both is listed as 114.3. Next closest sizes in common use are 110, and 139, each of which won't fit at all.

The Vitara has a centre bore of 60.1, and the xtrail 66.1.
The Vitara rim's centre bore is beveled on the inside, allowing it to go on easier. This also allowed a secure(ish) fit, even though it wasn't seated nearly properly.

So off to measure...
The xtrail 'axle' protrudes ~8mm. Adding ~1mm of the bevel on the hole in the wheel, should allow ~9mm clearance.
Picked up some 8mm spacers, and after installing, everything sits flush, and there is still a solid amount of force on the axle.

Now 8mm is more than I'd like, but the wheels still sit well inside the arches so I dug deeper.
The vitara rims have an offset of 50mm (meaning they're recessed INTO the car by 50mm.
The xtrail has 45mm, so they actually stick out 5mm further. 8mm spacers minus 5mm offset difference means the centre line of the new wheels sit just 3mm wider, which for suspension etc, is as good as nothing.

After a quick test drive, everything seems good. The diesel even seem to like the slightly taller gearing.
Indicated speed is still slightly faster than actual speed, but much closer now.

I'm keeping a close eye on things over the next week, but so far it seems good.

Pix soon.

With the spacers do you have enough of the studs to get a good threading of the wheel nuts ?

Re:

P.S. I figured what was actually making the noise.

Due to the bevel, the wheels were actually attached quite solidly, and weren't moving at all (not at 20km/hr anyway). With the wheels not clamped against the brake discs, they were just floating and wobbling around. When I braked slightly, the cappers held them in place and the noise stopped.

Yep. Plenty of thread. It is one thing I made a point of looking for.
The Vitara 'alloys' are more like steel rims, so without the spacers there actually seemed more thread than usual.

Glad you figured it out mate. I wouldn't be using those wheels on my exy regardless. They're not meant for it.
