My 2013 TL M9R Owners Manual states that the oil should be ACEA C4 LOW ASH HTHS 3.5 SAE 5W- 30.

I notice that many posters here say it should be C3. Would Nissan have altered the oil specs for this diesel engine?

I think that I can answer my own question on ACEA C3/C4 rated oils for the M9R diesel engine.
I seems that Nissan upgraded their engine oil rating from C3 to C4 from 2011 to the present (2014) for the M9R engine.

The folks here with pre 2011 M9R engines might want to check this with their Nissan dealer.

As an aside, I was quoted $113.00 for 5 litre pack of "Penrite Enviro+ C-4 premium full synthetic, SAE 5W-30" today at Repco. I went to Auto Barn and picked up 5 litre packs for under $40.00 each.

Below is the data that is supplied by Penrite for their latest ACEA C4 oil grade now specified by Nissan for the M9R engine. It is copied and pasted from their website.

ENVIRO+ C-4 is a premium full synthetic SAE 5W-30 engine oil. It is manufactured using the latest advances in low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur)* additive technology.

Application:

ENVIRO+ C-4 is designed for use in modern 4, 6 & 8+ cylinder multi-cam, multi-valve (including VVT), naturally aspirated, supercharged & turbocharged low emission engines.

ENVIRO+ C-4 is a SAE 5W-30, low SAPS oil designed for use in selected Renault, Nissan, Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover & Suzuki light duty diesel passenger cars and 4WD's that require oils meeting RN 0720 and ACEA C4.

ENVIRO+ C-4 ENVIRO+ C4 is recommended for Nissan Navara YD25 D40 4 Cylinder 2.5 Litre and D40 V9X V6 3.0 Litre turbo diesel engines form 2010 onwards that are fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). It is also recommended for Nissan X Trail M9R 2.0 Litre Turbo Diesel from 2011 onwards and Pathfinder R51 3.0 Litre V6 Turbo Diesel from 2011 onwards. **See notes below.

ENVIRO+ C-4 is suitable for use in petrol & light diesel engines including those fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) that require an ACEA C4 product.

ENVIRO+ C-4 is suitable for use in passenger cars, 4WDs & light commercial vehicles.

ENVIRO+ C-4 is not recommended for use in motorcycles.

ENVIRO+C-4 can be used with Petrol, LPG (Dual Fuel & LPi Liquid Phase Injection), E10 & light duty diesel engines with / without a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter).

** Note - Please check the Penrite Lube Guide for the correct product application per vehicle. Some vehicles NOT fitted with Diesel Particulate Filter may require an alternative Penrite engine oil.

Important Maintenance Information

For vehicles fitted with a Diesel Particulate filter we recommend the use of Penrite ENVIRO+DPF CLEANER to clean & prevent DPF blockages, maximise catalyst life and improve engine efficiency, power & fuel economy.

Product Benefits
•MAXIMISES diesel particulate life
•Improved fuel economy
•Long drain intervals
•Suitable for vehicles fitted with a DPF
•Extended exhaust catalyst life
•Emissions system friendly
•Highly shear stable to minimise oil consumption

Key Specifications:
•ACEA C4
•Renault RN 0720
•Ford M2C934-B (level)

* Low SAPS oils may sometimes be referred to as "Low Ash" oils

Penrite recommends the right product for the right application.

Re:

My owner's manual for my 2011 TL says ACEA C3. I am guessing the spec was upgraded.

The difference between C3 and C4 is minimal - the main thing is that the oil must be fully synthetic in the M9R engine.

Re: correct oil 2008 Nissan Xtrail T31 TS Auto Diesel

Hi, i have read through all the posts and as im not mechanically minded (can change my own oil) im a little confused as to which would be the best oil for my exy? I know it needs a low ash oil. My exy is fitted with a provent 200 and have travelled about 10000 Kms since it was put on. Since then i have drained out approx 400 mls of oil and the filter is soaked in oil. I have ordered a new filter for the Provent 200 and the correct oil filter but confused about what engine oil to get. I bought my Exy from a Holden dealer with an after market warranty so had to get it serviced at the Holden dealer and not sure if they used a good quality oil or not? Maybe thats why i have so much blow by oil in the Provent. Can someone recommend the correct ( good quality ) oil for my Exy? I will be towing with the Exy and moving to Hervey Bay in Queensland after Christmas. Any help would be greatly appreciated👍
Cheers
Greg

Penrith C-4 is currently the recommended oil. I think one of the Shell Ultras is also good

Re:

There are only 2 commonly available oils available in Australia that meet the specs of Nissans M9R diesel engine since 2012 to the present T32 M9R engine.
They are Penrite Enviro+ C4 5W 30, and Valvoline MST C4 5W 30. None of the other companies can supply a suitable oil to this date. i.e. ACEA C4.

Yep. I've been looking and these are the only 2 that I can see. Even on sites like shell oil match, nothing comes up now for the M9R. Previously the ultra helix c3 came up

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Hi all,

Just doing a bit of reading and this thread sparked my interest as to why there had been a change from 2011 for the oil type, albeit a minor change. Was there a change in the engine specs? Is there a potential engine issue that the C4 is able to prevent or delay? (I know call me suspicious)

I did a bit of on-line research and there does not appear to have been any major change in the M9R engine since 2006 (2007 for the Xtrail) so why the minor oil change?

As I have a 2010 model according to all the Penrite information my car does not require C4, however I just went back through some of my dealer service documents and from what I can see they have been putting C4 (in my case Edge Professional C4 5W30) in my Exy since at least January last year, which indicates to me that the C4 requirement is for all M9R engines!

Has anyone found any information that may indicate why this change was necessary?

PS - Interestingly I can't find anywhere on the net that has the Castrol C4 for sale, only C3. So either it is no longer available or maybe only bulk trade sales!

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

From what I have read the C4 has lower sulphur and lower ash than the C3 so I think Nissan (Renault) has changed the spec to help with the DPF and EGR issues some have been having.

Re: T31 M9R diesel oil

Thanks Kev,

As I've not had (touch wood) any DPF or EGR issues I didn't think about that. I only got my exy at the end of December 2010 so maybe the dealer has been using C4 most of the time I've had the car and ,who knows, maybe that's contributed to not having any issues.

Allan
