4wd and traction control

Hi can anyone tell me if 4wd and traction control work in reverse, the reason I ask is that I had both front wheels in the mud and the rear on tarmac and it just spun the drivers front wheel. I had it in 4wd lock but the esp was on, also afterwards I noticed the tyre on the n/s front was about 19 psi. As far as I can tell it works ok in forward gear. It is a T31 auto diesel.

Thanks from UK

Have to say I've never tried it emoticon
If you could get into the same position again, try it without ESP on and manually select 1st gear with only a little accelerator because if the speed of the spinning front wheel is registered over 40kph then lock mode would disengage and maybe that might have stopped it from working.

Re: 4wd and traction control

Ok I will be down the field next weekend. I will stick the nose in some mud and see what happens. I did not think to put it into first or turn the esp off at the time.

Re: 4wd and traction control

So far as I can recall it's because you were in lockup 4WD.

In lockup 4WD the Active Brake Limited Slip doesn't operate. If you left it in auto 4WD the ABLS would have kicked in and locked the spinning wheel.

Others might be able to correct me or better elaborate on this and I'd have to go back into the owners manual to verify, but I'm pretty sure that ABLS doesn't work in lockup 4WD.

I found this out myself out bush one day...got stuck in a rut with a spinning wheel in lockup 4WD. Took her back to auto 4WD, the ABLS then kicked in and I got out easily.

Hope this helps.

If you are correct, then Nissan definitely got this wrong in my opinion. It is when using 4WD LOCK that the most extreme conditions could be encountered and the ABLS should be needed most.
I could only presume it would be something to do with possible wind-up having a wheel braked to have Nissan program the system that way.

Re: 4wd and traction control

Well I tried to get stuck in some deep mud this weekend knowing that we had a tractor to pull me out if need be and total failure, however hard I tried I could not get stuck. Just the briefest of wheel spin and out it came, so I suppose I must wait for the snow to arrive to find out. Thanks for all comments I will update in January
