Re:
So.... I've done more research on max tyre sizes for T31 in NSW and ACT.
ACT = VSB14 NCOP11 Section LS https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP11_Section_LS_Tyres_Suspension_Steering_V2_1Jan_2011%20v3.pdf
NSW = VSI09 Rev4 http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/standards/vsi-09-rev4.pdf
There was talk of going to percentage based tyre size changes, but I haven't found anything (not even in Victoria). Essentially, its 15mm in overall diameter (OD)
The T31 comes with 225/60/17 with an OD of 702mm. The TL/Ti with its 18" has OD of 694mm. The question is whether the TL/Ti can use the OD for the 17" TS/ST, as technically they're different models - follow the advice of your tyre placard.
So, lets say the 702mm applies to ALL x-trails, that means max OD can be 717mm.
There are very few oversize offroad tyres one can go to, without breaking the 15mm limit:
16"
215/70/16 = 707mm: BFG AT KO and KO2 (both in LT) and Bridgestone D697 and Firestone Destination A/T (both non-LT)
235/65/16 = 712mm: nothing A/T, a few passenger and touring tyres like Conti Vanco4Season
17"
235/60/17 = 714mm: Cooper A/T3 (passenger construction)
annnnddd thats about it.
From what I'm hearing, insurance companies have cottoned on to oversize tyres (235/70/16 is VERY noticeable) so now I"m just waiting for the KO2's to be released in Aus next quarter.

Re:
Good work Dave.... but honestly - RMS need to get their house in order.
Both VSI 6 and VSI 9 are listed here:
http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/standards/vsi-06-light-vehicle-modifications.pdf
Both VSI6 (7%) and 9(15mm) talk about OD maximums. From a legal point of view, VSI9 is much more specific and I would say would override VSI6 based on literature detail... but the way these regulatory instruments have been written, they are actually independent of each other... so very confusing.
I'd definitely be getting something in writing. The 7% rule doesn't sound very safe... for a Series IV or V with 225/60/17 (702mm), that would allow 751mm. My old 235/70/16 (736mm) barely fit in the arches without scrubbing.
I've sent off a query to RMS

Re: Thinking about oversized tyres on T31
That looks nice and mean now ... If one could phrase it that way.
I have the same tyres (and size) on the original steel rims. I like the black colour and I would consider upgrading our Exy with the same, as I think it would contrast well against our pearl white car with dark window tint. Although the boss has expressed how much she doesn't like the idea of black rims. Anyway ...
Can I ask how much just the rims set you back? When I looked to upgrade our rims with our tyres at the time our options were around $160. Not something I could justify t the time. The "raker", which I think over owners have used in a black powder I think would have suited well.

Re:
For NSW X-trailers
I have received official confirmation about the overlap between VSI09 Page 2 (15mm) and VSI06 Item 13 (7%). 7% overrides the old 15mm rule. Happy to send the response to anyone who would like a copy of it for legal purposes. Maybe Jalal can make a link to keep on the forum?
But there's a bit of a spanner which I'm clearing up - essentially if you modify the wheel/rim (going from 17" to 16"), then according to Item 14 of VSI06, your has to be covered by VSI09, meaning you're now 15mm above the 17" OD, not 7% (which is only for OEM wheels). I'm waiting to hear back from a technical person I've been dealing with at NSW RMS to see whether VSI09 applies if you drop to 16".

Re:
Ok. For those stepping down to 16" - as long as your new rim stays within the guidelines of VSI06 Item 14, then VSI06 Item 13 will apply.
NSW X-trail owners can increase their overall diameter by 7%
as long as
- OD is +/- 7%
- if changing rims, then width remains within 25mm of OEM
- load rating is the same or higher
- speed rating is the same or higher.
You're good to go.
So for those sticking with 17", its 225/65/17 and those going to 16" its 235/70/16, before you have to worry about scrubbing or ADR18 (speedo variance).
Please note the above only applies to NSW.
In ACT/NT/SA - VSB No.14 Section LS applies in full, and we're capped at 15mm as we're not 'designed for off-road use' (the discussion I had was that we lacked low range... but a previous model manual Forester with 1:1.2 transfer case was ok).
