Started out as ticking noise, ended up being towed (T31 diesel) **UPDATE: bottom end bearing**
Hi there fellow xtrailers
I'm new here, always a reader but never a participator until now. I've written an Intro but a quick run down is that Id like some advice or opinions. I'm not exactly mechanically minded and don't know terminology so please bear with me here
Bought my xtrail 2 years ago, 08 model T31 TL 2.0 turbo diesel cvt. Came with complete nissan service history up to 120,000km with extended warranty to 140,000km? I think? when I bought it. It's a daily driver but we use it to frequently tow our 15ft jayco pop top for shot trips. The GVM of van is 1200kg. A bit more background info is my partner is a hardworking RACV mechanic (workshop supervisor) and he mainly does the work on my car. It has now done 155,000km after trips to NT and QLD. It's services regularly.
2 weeks ago I split a hose going to/from my intercooler which we fixed and everything is fine. Yesterday coming back from SA to VIC while we were idling outside a shop the car started makin a regular ticking noise which became worse as we accelerated but never went away. A few k's down the road the noise got worse so we pulled over. When a truck came close I said let's move it off the shoulder a bit while we wait for the tow. It wouldn't even turn over and a horrible grinding noise came from the engine. My partner is pretty worried and seems to think this is BAD news. As do I.
It sounded similar to some of the videos posted on this forum of timing chain tensioner problems albeit those were in petrol engines so I'm only guessing. Does anybody have some wisdom to share on what could be the problem and whther fixable or looking at another engine?
Julie

Re:
For anyone at home, or wth similar issues...
Partner is working on the car at his workshop. After pulling the top end apart and finding nothing, also nothing in the rocker gear, has decided to drain the sump. Metal filings and part of a bearing were found. So the engine is getting pulled out, as well as transmission and full assessment being done on whether the engine is salvageable. The oil we have been using is Mobil super 3000 xe 5w30. So it turns out the worst case scenario has happened. We have a baby due in 10 weeks give or take, this being our main car for travel and to get to work etc. I'm pretty devastated. I still owe $ on the damn thing.
Julie
EDIT to add: after a lot of snooping online, have found perhaps why. We have an aftermarket performance chip on the car, for probably the last year. According to the following link, nissan chose to 'de-tune' a series of m9r engines due to bearings not holding up under demand. Wish we had known this before adding a performance chip!!

Re:
Julie, most sorry to hear about your bearing dilemma.
I'm wondering if it might be worth you putting a separate entry in the T31 Diesel section of the forum warning about the use of performance chips in the M9R engine and perhaps citing that letter as a reference?
I'm wondering if the performance chip has perhaps "overclocked" the engine a little (to steal a computing term) and over-stressed the bottom end bearings.
Good luck with the repair and I think a lot of us diesel owners would be keen to eventually see some pics of the repair work, if you can manage.

There's some more about a possible problem that can lead to bearing failures here:
http://www.x-trail-uk.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12553
In reading through the thread, the software update seems to have reduced the maximum RPM limit. It also mentions that Nissan believes most normal Xtrail users need not worry about the update.
Cold comfort for you Julie I'm sorry, but I guess ST and TL owners are now aware of the matter and might go easy when pushing the engine at consistently high power.

I've already thought of this and thank you for replying!
As for the repairs, when my partner starting inspecting the engine he found more metal shavings through the engine. I'm not sure of specifics. He rang me straight away and said that we were probably wasting our time and money to recondition the engine as we may only get another 50,000km out of it and it was time to make a decision. I tracked down an engine from melbourne for $3500 (trade price) with supposedly 89,000km on the clock. It was out of an accident vehicle and so not reconditioned. It arrived the next day and when my partner plugged the scan tool in to ECU? It only read 58,000kms so a bit of a win there.
The drama continues though. Got the engine running smoothly but an error keeps coming up related to the turbo. Its suspected that my boost controller has ended its life and is been speculated as whether this could have contributed to the extra engine load. I don't really understand how this works but my partner has assured me that it's possible that the turbo has 'over boosted and spun a bearing'. The link I provided in my other post says the same thing as your link. We are a bit wiser now!!
I didn't get a photo of the damages or metal shavings as my engine was sent away as a swap motor to be reconditioned. I'm not sure how to add images on here either? The only ones I hve is the car on a hoist and trans and engine on the floor underneath.

Julie,
Have a look at a post just put onto the forum by one of our Irish members about the bearings in their T30 2.0 diesel.
Bearing recall for 2.0 Diesel in Ireland
You may wish to take this up with Nissan here in Australia or maybe even contact the other member directly to see if they can give you a link to find a VIN range for the recall.
