Re: T30 X-Trail Recall Aibarg Inflator

Is it legal to disable your airbags? obviously these are faulty. Nissan Australia are pretty slack. I rang them about my airbag inflator and they couldn't give me any info even tho a recall had been issued. Took them over 12 months to send me a letter of what I already knew needed to happen. Don't expect to hear from them anytime soon.

Re:

I will leave this thread as is for the time being until Nissan or the Government Recall website assigns a new Recall Campaign ID, as at the moment it is still referring to the Inflator Recall for all car makes (not just Nissan).

Disconnecting airbag/s is illegal and your insurance can get refused if you ever involved in an accident. You can't disconnect the airbags unless Nissan does so themselves and it is accompanied with the engineering certificate justifying why it was disconnected.

Re: T30 X-Trail Recall Aibarg Inflator

Max,
It is not Nissan. Every manufacturer is in the same predicament.
The airbag manufacturer has around 660,000 units to replace and they are saying it will be upwards of 2-3 yrs until all are done mainly because of how long it will take to manufacture replacements. That's if the insurance company will cover it I guess.

Re:

In the news article yesterday authorities have warned against any attempts to disconnect the airbags for any reason and that any mechanic caught or found doing so will be fully liable for rendering the car road unworthy, so be careful.

To be honest this smells like a class action in the making and would probably require a mandate for all affected owners to surrender their car to the corresponding manufacturer and be given a loan car until the defect is fixed. I can't see how they can legally allow people to drive with this safety impacting defect for upto 2 years and be in the right about it. Surely they can't expect owners to just park their cars for 2 years and wait for this recall to be carried-out!

How does this affect rego or insurance? I was asked this today and I really had no idea how to answer.

Ask your insurance company and the Roads & Maritime Services

Are you referring to the recall or the affect of disconnecting the airbag/s on your insurance and rego?

Re: T30 X-Trail Recall Aibarg Inflator

The Airbag Inflator Recall Details Confirmed and Released today.

Nissan Australia considers this recall an amendment to the airbag recall of last year.

PART-1 (PRA number: 2015/14751
Date published: 10th June 2015)

The recall campaign affects vehicles built between April and December 2003 and sold in Australia. T30 X-Trail (10336 vehicles affected) VIN Range: JN1TBNT30A0017048 to JN1TBNT30A0033200

Details of the recall can be found HERE

PART-2 (PRA number: 2015/14752
Date published: 10th June 2015)

This the second part of the Airbag Inflator Recall applicable to the T30 Nissan X-Trail model built between January 2004 and March 2007 and sold in Australia. T30 X-Trail (40381 Vehicles affected) VIN Range: JN1TBNT30A0033202 to JN1TBNT30A0216578

Details of the recall can be found HERE

It seems to only impact on the front passenger airbag, so the driver's side is not impacted by this, so it makes you wonder if Takata only manufactured the passenger side airbags?

Re: T30 X-Trail Recall Aibarg Inflator

My VIN falls inbetween the numbers for recall 1 but I checked with the dealer today and they informed me my Xtrail is not listed as one of the affected ones.

Looking at the VIN range, there are 16,153 numbers but the recall states only 10,336 vehicles affected. This seems to be consistent with the dealer's explanation that there are sub-classes within the VIN range and just because mine was within the range does not mean it was in one of the affected sub-classes.

He said that if anyone hadn't received a notice yet for Recall 1 then they were not affected.
He also suggested that any notices for Recall 2 could be a while coming until they assess the best way to get all the replacement units ready.

Re:

Yep Kev, the recalls have a note saying that not all vehicles in the VIN range are affected, although am not sure how Nissan determined that you would have a different airbag?

If I was you, I would insist on getting that in writing to cover myself.
