Noisy injectors

Just thought i'd start a discussion on noisy injectors on the QR25. Every old T30 x-trail I hear including mine, has noisy injectors, almost diesel-ish sounding. Mine does it, particularly under heavy throttle, the ticking is very noticeable. Injector cleaner etc doesn't do anything for it. I know it's the injectors as it gets much louder under throttle and stops once I back off, and has done it since I owned the car.

Has anyone had any success in making them quieter? I heard a T31 go past me the other day on throttle/load up a hill and that didn't do it at all so I wonder if they changed the injectors used.

I am not sure what exact injectors are in use on my 02 T30, I assume JECS type injectors going off the T30 injector rebuild thread ... maybe I should get a cheap set of Denso or Bosch equivalents if I really care that much.

Of course if the noise doesn't actually affect anything other than general quietness/comfort there is probably no need to do anything...

Re:

Have you ever thought of having them ultra sonic cleaned.
Most mechanics have a machine that will clean injectors.

Re:

Injectors do not make noise. They just become less efficient. I'm not sure on the petrol engine of the xtrail but I would be checking the lifters emoticon (or equivalent)

Re:

Yeah I know the lifters are OK, checked the clearances when I was doing the headgasket and the guys who reco'ed the cylinder head sorted out the valve clearances there then too (as well as brand new exhaust valves)

I think I will try the cleaning trick, I don't think just orings/pintles and filters will do it, the noise may well be from further in the injector. I know the local mechanic has just got an ultrasonic cleaner, might pop them off and ask him to put them in the machine and change the orings to the spare set I have

The more I read about it, it probably is dirty injector solenoids/internals causing the loud-ish ticking. Will do the screwdriver between-ear-and-injector trick to narrow it down and go from there.

Re:

Turns out, after a long time with this, the problem was actually a small hole in the exhaust manifold. It got so bad that the mechanic who does my pink slip this year picked it up straight away.

Hole welded, now sounds ALOT quieter. I think it had the hole for a rather long time.
