Re: Head gasket blown

Thanks DJR9000, thought I should give a quick update. After about 2 weeks of running with mostly water in the system, not a single missing drop of water! Stranger still there was no sign of foam in the oil cap (I'd cleaned it out) and apparently no further issue.

Then I figured I may as well flush the cooling system, figuring it was overdue and I had thrown off the concentration anyway. After flushing the radiator and the overflow reservoir (didn't bother with the block) it all of a sudden started losing coolant again, roughly 1 litre in 4 days.

After speaking with my local mechanic (who is very trustworthy, I avoid dealerships like the plague) he mentioned that coolant was much thinner than water alone, and that would explain the leak after bringing it back up to a 50/50 concentration. He then also said that there is a chance my 2002 ST may have a fault with the intake manifold, which gives similar symptoms to a BHG, however he would have to check it to be sure.

Has anyone else heard of this before? I can't find anything about it anywhere on the net. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Re:

Very weird indeed as the concentrate is half water.
Run straight water in it again and see if it leaks.

Re:

I've heard that glycol in the coolant makes the water more "slippery" and can get past seals/gaskets more easily.

The design of the cooling system in the x-trail does not put coolant through the intake manifold, he is probably getting confused with V-type engines where the intake manifold gasket also passes coolant.

I would let the car get up to temp with the coolant in (make sure there is pressure in the top radiator hose, give it a squeeze), stop it, leave it for a couple of hours and then remove the sparkplugs and use a syringe and plastic tube and see if you can pull coolant out of one of the cylinders. Mine was Cyl #1, didn't do the syringe test but with a bright torch I could see it was wet on top of the cylinder.

If you're going to run less coolant in there to avoid the issue then there is a few inhibitor-only products out there with no glycol that will inhibit corrosion as running little or no coolant means no corrosion protection. Maybe call the Castrol tech-line and ask them about it, they are pretty helpful when I speak to them. They recommend their NF coolant on the xtrail which is free of something or other, amines or phosphate like that but I am not sure of the makeup of the inhibitor

Obviously don't drive to the snow or Tasmania with no or little glycol emoticon

The leak in the HG may or may not get bigger, i doubt it would get smaller though... i'd be fixing it promptly but up to you.

Re: Head gasket blown

After reading all the helpful information on this thread, I'm convinced I'm on my way to join the head gasket club emoticon Coolant overflow bubbling and rapid loss of overflow after the last service 500km ago, before the service there was none in it. When I open the radiator cap froth comes out, just does not look good. I'm not quite sure if its using oil, but its done 170,000km and that's generally(from what I've read) the destined xtrail time.
I dont have the cash to pay for a mechanic(like I trust them anyway) so with all the DIY tips on here ill give it a go myself, done things like it on Commodores can't be too hard if you know what your doing. If anyone has any advice, would be welcomed. Can't believe it, haven't even done 1000km in her yet! Anyway good learning experience I guess.
Cheers Mitch

Back on the road... seems to have a bit more power now after the head refresh, coolant pressure seems to be holding now and filled+flushed with some oil and a throwaway filter. Got a nissan oil filter and some full synthetic Penrite HPR10 in it. Will fill it up with Nissan coolant in the morning after a flush.

Ended up changing the water pump, both thermostats, chain tensioner, O2 sensor, cam+crank sensors. All Ajusa gaskets, the ajusa head set including head gasket, intake/exhaust manifold gasket, thermostat gasket, injector o-rings and a couple of other bits (basically all the gaskets for the cylinder head) was only about $175 bucks.. beats nissan pricing and the ajusa HG looks tough as

Hi im just wondering if anyone knows where I can get an AJUSA head gasket kit from? ive had a bit of a google but no luck! Its for a T31 2008 Ti, thanks!

posticon Re: Head gasket blown

I joined the BHG club about a month ago. Not Happy Jan !!. Rough idle began in April after a fresh load of fuel, the missus even noticed it, and then told me. checked engine over and couldn't find external problem.
Long story shortened for here, # 3 compression was at 185 psi, # 1 + 4 at 205 psi, # 2 at 195 psi. # 3 was being cleaned of carbon build up by coolant leaching into cylinder. There were no pressure bubbles in rad neck when new cap was removed. 5 days after checking engine it cooked itself on the afternoon return school run 50mtrs from home. Bugger !!.
After calming down and investigating options here in Perth, I decided to have my engine rebuilt.
The business I used has been rebuilding engines for about 20 years, very knowledgable folks.Yes they have seen quite a few QR engines with BHG's, and they have figured out why it happens so frequently to these engines.
As was explained to me the manufacturing process of casting the block in alloy, with the steel liners, is good, but Nissan used the block's too soon after casting, not allowing the alloy to cure properly. So as the engine heated and cooled whilst being used, at some point in it's life the liners would sink in their casting bores, by about .005" This in turn would then cause the head gasket to lose it's tension on the top of the block. So no matter how flat the head was, or how thick the gaskets were, unless you had the block machined flat again you would eventually have the same problem. This problem was encountered between cyls 2+3 the most, sometimes 2+3+4. They assured me that my engine would not suffer the same fate as the original due to the block being fully cured. This rebuild cost me $4700 inc GST and comes with 4yr/80K warranty, which I think is pretty good these days.
As part of the warranty I have to replace the cat convertor, but I had to anyway because the coolant going out the exhaust over the past few months had destroyed it any way.
As of this date I have already fitted my engine back in and am in the process of fitting all the bits back on. Hope to have it running this weekend.
There is more detail to this story, but I have had enough of typing, hope I haven't bored you too much,
Cheers,

Re: Head gasket blown

Certainly not boring but rather an interesting explanation. Not being mechanical minded I can't really comment on the findings but I hope you succeed in getting it all back together to enjoy many future years of happy motoring...................enjoy

cheers

Re: Head gasket blown

my T30 manual did 280,000 hard hard miles, high revs, towing 1400kg and radiator plastic top seperated. Caught it only because cruise control threw out causing me to look at gauges - horror - pulled up but "didn't" turn engine off and let run till gauge came down. Still doesn't use oil and still runs like a clock.

Re: Head gasket blown

Well our 2002 Trail has joined the blown head gasket club after 350,000 kms, so we think maybe its time to let it go - quoted 2800 to fix then plus whatever else is found - radiator problems etc. I haven't posted in a long time since our son has been driving the exxy. we all reckoned it was a great car. Any suggestions about what to do with it now? Is it saleable as is?
