Re:

That's really a un-educated thing to say Todd and do you really think only those who go off-road deserve to subscribe to 4WD Action? LOL emoticon Un-believable that you managed to come up with such utter crap really. There are many other things 4WD Action reviews and provides information besides off-roading!

In any case, the question was about a soft-roader magazine and I think with the number of people choosing soft roaders is on the rise (have a look at the total sales of the X-Trails alone since 2001 in a recent article), there will surely be a member base interested in reading and finding-out the capabilities of the soft-roaders (all and not only the xtrails) and other general interesting articles like "how many times Todd clocked you going off-road in your soft-roader" LOL emoticon

Re: Softroader Magazine

Although there is a vast majority of softroaders on the market Jalal, todd does have a point. I said it in my first post. Although I personally would support a softroader based magazine I just don't believe the fan base is large enough to sustain it like there is for 4wd action.

Rest assured im still exploring the capabilities of the xtrail and plan to take t up to Mitchell Falls up off the Gibb river road next year. When I tell people thats where I'm heading they look at me surprised. Maybe I will fail but maybe I won't. I don't think if I went up there with a film crew that many people would be interested hahaha.....well I know the forum guys would be emoticon

I said those that go off-road or have an interest in off-roading would be interested in 4WDAction. I used you as an example of someone who has said they are not interested in that mag. I also said I wasn't having a go at you. No need to get defensive. Nothing wrong with not having an interest in off-roading I was purely illustrating that people in the 'no interest' category are not the target market for that mag.

That mag includes 3-4 'travel' articles every issues. Guess what? Every single one is an off-road/4x4 destination. Pretty much every article in the mag is related to 4wds which (surprise surprise) are used off-road.

It's uneducated to think that people would buy a mag in an area for which they have no particularly strong interest.

I completely agree that softroaders are an ever expanding market and the sales are increasing every year. But mants has suggested a magazine in the 'same formats as the likes of 4wd Action or Pat Callinans 4wd Adventure'. It is a reasonable assumption that a mag similar to these two would be based on off-roading and aimed at an audience who appreciates off-roading. I do not believe there is much of this audience within the softroader owners market. I definitely agree that some would be interested but the percentage would be tiny and unsustainable. Softroader owners would be better served hassling Pat Callinan to include more easy/beginner standard trips and to expand their product reviews etc to include the occasional accessory or modification to a softroader.

Re:

Am not even sure why the comparison was made to 4WD Action in the first place. Totally different subscribers and totally different target market all-together. What works for 4WD Action in terms of its subscriber-base has absolutely no relation to the proposed soft-roaders magazine which can cover and needs to cover many other interesting articles besides off-roading.

And Todd, I have interest in off-roading despite what you might think, I simply don't have interest in this particular magazine and the articles it provides. Personal opinion really and not related to my off-roading pattern.

And BTW, I also LOVE riding bikes, which I guess in your view makes me less an off-roader as well emoticon

I dare say mants likes the mags he mentioned but realises that the X-Trail is not capable of doing most of the trips they do and finds that the majority of reviews etc are not really relevant to the X-Trail. I think the proposed softroader mag would remedy that.

I'm glad you still have an interest. I guess I simply haven't seen it.

There are many interests of mine which I don't share as openly, but if you like for me to make a list, I'd be happy to send you an email emoticon Keep in mind that my interest in off-roading itself may differ from yours and that is fine too, as there are varying degrees of it. mine could simply include a run in a self-made mud patch, yours could be just a bit more extreme emoticon

That's exactly what the soft-roader magazine would address, it doesn't need to be about soft-roaders going out of their way to prove they can go out with the big boys on some trips. It just need to show the limits of each soft roader class and what it is capable of with some modifications ON and OFF road.

Re:

Hey all,

Just read through all the above posts, i was referring to the likes of 4wd action magazine for the reason of what it has, such as, trip reports with photos, product reviews, perhaps other sport adventures like kayaking and mountain biking in places we wouldn't be without our vehicles. I should of been more clear with what i meant as in the format of the magazine and not the content of their trips. Its pretty obvious an Xtrail wont do the tracks those guys drive in there Patrols but i think reports would be based on a format like that but everything relevant to softroading as these cars can still take us to pretty awesome locations.

Re:

That's what I thought too Jonathan, you referred to the 4WD Action magazine as an example of format rather than content. The soft-roader magazine can indeed use the same format but it would have its own character.

Anyway, great idea mate and hope it takes off.

Re: Softroader Magazine

Having such a mag and getting a substantial reader base would go a long way to convincing accessories manufacturers like ARB to start developing more off-road stuff for softroaders.
Currently they have the opinion that softroaders are not serious enough off-road vehicles and there is no market for accessories.
