02 Blown head gasket Charity job!!

Hullo peeps at this here forum. Lots of great info..im not a exie owner-im an impostor (although i do have a Nissan Elgrand 3.0 diesal and love it!-it has its quriks)..but my tenant is (and shes a nurse and shes broke!-and im trying to help her out she has no idea bless her-poor thing she paid ten grand for it 7 months ago). Her 2002 xtrail died and was towed back to mine (by me!!) i and i believe shes done a head gasket or similar...i do alotta mechanical work in a big well fit out shed. i have the head off. Just wanted to check that i needed to change the cylinder head to the upgraded one or just get it checked out by cylinder head fella in Lismore..? Also can anyone shed some light for me on this idea of slipping sleeves over the current pistons. Whats the go there. And is the process of renewing the timing chain etc tricky or just a matter of slipping the chain over the lower cog?
ll change the crank/o2/cam sensor and the water pump. And everyone cool with the ebay stuff or shoud i be going to partsouq.com?
And should i be concerned about the volume of water i found?
thanks heaps again...Image[/img]

Hi Morty,

Can you explain the symptoms which lead to the suspicion of a blown head gasket ?
Maybe there might be something else too but unless we know what happened it is difficult to tell what extra work might be needed.

Thanks kev..i emailed you but it mustn't have come thru. No prob.
Well she says on thurs she rolled home from work and noticed the temp gauge of the dial!! So she put water in, went to head off to mullum got about 3 k;s down road then poofta...she stopped. i towed to my mechanic mate and he assessed it fri and (hes very negative when it comes to diagnosis!!) he said take it to the wreckers and get $500! He said water was shooting out the piston and that the theres no point doing the head as theres probably problems down below and that'll cause probs later??!!
(i had probs with my elgrand running bad a few weeks ago and he reckoned it was the gearbox thus van is fcked and get rid of it..it was a $60 MAF sensor!!!-hes only interested in doing regos).
Thanks for yr interest bud

Re:

If there is water in the bores it could just be that the head gasket has split in several places, not too un common.
Have you had a good look at the head gasket were the water jackets are near the bore hole?

What was she using, coolant or water?
What colour was the coolant / water when you drained the radiator?
Was it milky or have oil spots?

Re: 02 Blown head gasket Charity job!!

Morty,
I'm not a mechanic but maybe the quickest way to see if there is anymore wrong with the head/block is to clean everything up and look for signs of corrosion tracking between the water jacket and cylinders. Then if it seems OK, install a new head gasket, assemble it back together, drain and refill the oil, replace the water with coolant mix, crank it over a few times without it starting (remove the fuel pump fuse) to circulate the oil to the pistons and do a compression check. This will tell you if all the rings and cylinders are OK.

If she has been filling it with water then it sounds like she has had an overheating or water leak problem for a while too so once it is running then there might also be a radiator/hose leak to find too.

Changing the chain in-situ is difficult. Not that I have done it but the access down that part of the engine to remove the covers and access the bottom sprocket to align the timing marks, especially the balance chain underneath, means access is through the wheel well with the plastic splashguard removed.
Scroll down the page a bit in this thread to see the timing chains (in a sideways pic).

What makes you think the chain needs replacement ?
Most times if anything needs replacement it is only the tensioner which is easily done, or the oil is too thin and not providing enough hydraulic pressure for the tensioner at higher RPMs.

Re:

Huh sounds like yr on the money there kev. Ive just been of the phone to my mate at nissan workshop and he reckons it'd be a !@#$ to get in without engine out of vehicle. And my gut instinct is like yours. Why would the chain be that stretched?? Its only on a spring??
Ill get a new tensioner and just get the head back on.
