Re: 02 Blown head gasket Charity job!!
Hi Morty,
Can you explain the symptoms which lead to the suspicion of a blown head gasket ?
Maybe there might be something else too but unless we know what happened it is difficult to tell what extra work might be needed.

Re:
If there is water in the bores it could just be that the head gasket has split in several places, not too un common.
Have you had a good look at the head gasket were the water jackets are near the bore hole?
What was she using, coolant or water?
What colour was the coolant / water when you drained the radiator?
Was it milky or have oil spots?

Re: 02 Blown head gasket Charity job!!
Morty,
I'm not a mechanic but maybe the quickest way to see if there is anymore wrong with the head/block is to clean everything up and look for signs of corrosion tracking between the water jacket and cylinders. Then if it seems OK, install a new head gasket, assemble it back together, drain and refill the oil, replace the water with coolant mix, crank it over a few times without it starting (remove the fuel pump fuse) to circulate the oil to the pistons and do a compression check. This will tell you if all the rings and cylinders are OK.
If she has been filling it with water then it sounds like she has had an overheating or water leak problem for a while too so once it is running then there might also be a radiator/hose leak to find too.

Re: 02 Blown head gasket Charity job!!
Changing the chain in-situ is difficult. Not that I have done it but the access down that part of the engine to remove the covers and access the bottom sprocket to align the timing marks, especially the balance chain underneath, means access is through the wheel well with the plastic splashguard removed.
Scroll down the page a bit in this thread to see the timing chains (in a sideways pic).
What makes you think the chain needs replacement ?
Most times if anything needs replacement it is only the tensioner which is easily done, or the oil is too thin and not providing enough hydraulic pressure for the tensioner at higher RPMs.
