Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

As i am slowly working on turboing the exy i figured i better look into some better brakes.

i noticed previously in this thread the 300zx/r32 callipers bolt direct onto the stock mounting points...
just so happens ive gota set of these laying around at home so today i started to see just what exactly is required to make them work.

Image
Image

for the most part all seems pretty good
Image

but then there is a few problems i ran into..
without the rotor they do bolt up as previously mentioned, however they dont sit with the STD rotor. They need about 3-5mm more clearence inside the calliper. so i thought as they are a 4pot calliper that can be pulled apart i thought id see how i could make up the room.

as you can see below there isnt much space between the inner edge where the rotor hits and where the inner bolt runs through the calliper so shaving the inside isnt going to work...
Image

the 2nd problem is that they may need a 5mm spacer/washer between the mounting point and the calliper, that is unless i can work out a better soloution for the rotor which im already researching. this may mean the splash plate may need to be removed in order for it to work with the right rotor but im going to try keep the modifactions minimal so if there is a way to leave them on i will.

so we need a smaller outside diamater rotor with all the same standard specs.. easy? no.... well sort of..

ive had a look through my DBA pdf to see what comes close and i may have found one.
Now the T30 rotor measures as follows(as from DBA):
280mm outside
28mm rotor thickness
49mm overall height(measured with rotor flat on ground to the outer face where the bolt holes are)
and finally, a centre hole of 68mm

these are the main points needed to match another rotor, so far the closest is:
276mm rotor
49mm high
28mm thick rotor but a 62mm hole.
ths could easily be machined out to allow it to slide over the hub but until i get my hands on the rotor im not going to know

more news to follow as i find out
Cheers
Mick

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

I assume this is for a T30 exy.
Are the hubs different to the T31?
The Koleos uses 320MM x 28MM discs.
Ergo swept area would be larger.
Don't know if the caliper is different.
Worth some investigation?

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

Do you really need to upgrade the brakes Mick ?
The Xtrail GT was a turbo 2.0L so check if the same calipers were used in that as the standard T30 then if so, you should be good for the extra power and braking.

Re:

Kev, ill be honest... its coz I can lol.

and while the GT is a 2L its packing double the power so id be guessing the brakes should be bigger?(Ill research that)

ive actually done this upgrade on my other project car(old Toyota Supra) and the braking is awesome(even without ABS)

ive just noticed in my previous post ive thrown up the wrong pic. this shows how much spacing is required to make these fit evenly over the rotor. as you can see I may need to see if I can remove the inner bolt spacer to swap it over to the other side allowing better rotor clearance and less spacing required on the caliper to hub
Image

one thing though is it looks like rims would need to be changed as the stock 16's don't look like they will fit (ill confirm this this week as I'm upgrading front shocks)

I'm coming up on 300K on the car and while i upgraded the rotors and pads around 100K ago (RDA rotors and Bendix pads) they seem pretty good. bit of dust from the pads but this may change once I too upgrade to slotted rotors in the upcoming weeks

You have any issues with the RDA rotors and Bendix pads?
Did you go the slotted version of the rotors?

I have the slotted DBA rotors and Bendix 4WD pads and no problems with them at all.

Re: Upgrading Brakes

BEVANI,

Did/do you have the stock R32 GTS-T or Z32 300zx rotors as well as the calipers? I have seen this before in most Nissan's and Datsun's. Even though there is a 100mm strut mounting spacing the stock rotors do not fit over the factory rotors due to the size of the Sumitomo brake caliper's, therefore you usually need matching rotors and calipers.

Since you have a T30 you disks are:
280 x 28mm with a 49mm depth

Try the R32 GTS-t rotors which are:
280 x 30mm with 54mm depth.

From you photo the added 2mm thickness along with the depth increase should work.

I personally have a T31 TL and i've murdered the stock rotors, replaced them with DBA T2, locked up the slides on the crappy stock calipers causing another set of rotors to be unserviceable therefore i'm looking at:
R32 GTR calipers with R33GTR rotors and a dog bone to make up the size difference. The only issues i'm running into is seeing if the matched rotors and calipers are direct fit or weather my dog bones will be custom and who can make the custom brake lines i will need.

There is a good article that i will try to find form Wilwood about brakes size requirements and which one is the variable for what. The article states that the outer diameter is designed for the requires force for braking and the width of the rotors is for the required heat dissipation.

Re: Brake Upgrades & Brake Dust

Hey Bevani,

Any news on the brake upgrade ?
I'm reading through a similar thread on the B15U forum about changing the brakes on their Sentra over to the 300zx 4-pot ones and there is A LOT of information about the 3 different types (26mm, 30mm, 30mm steel) and the mods needed to fit them.

Eagerly waiting for your details Ravi.

Did you look at upgrading the rears as well or only do the front 4-pots ?
