I have about 5000km before my original-fit Dunlop 7000s are worn out. I'm most definitely replacing them with Cooper CS4s.
I firmly believe that in tyres, you get what you pay for. I've never skimped on tyres and have never minded paying a little more for them - after all, they are the only things between you and the road that will save you when things go South - good tyres have saved my backside more than once. CS4s are definitely not cheap - but they seem to out-perform most other tyres in their class, so I agree with Scot - worth at least one try.

Re: Replacement Tyres

I'm possibly changing back to a H/T tyre when the Yokohamas wear out as i do only 3 - 4 short offroad trips per year. I'm looking at choosing between Cooper CS4, Toyo open country H/T, Kumho or Maxxis in H/T pattern. The Toyo gets a good review in tyre forums.

Yep. Thats my plan as well. I do about 45-50,000km per year. Most of it on the highway, and not enough offloading to justify the expense and bump in fuel consumption.

I'll just keep my A/T's on the 16" steelies i've got for the odd offloading trip these days.

Re:

You guys realise that the tread of the tyre wont affect your fuel consumption, right? The overall/rolling diameter of the tyre is what affects fuel consumption, as it is effectively altering the gear ratios of the car. I can appreciate the change in tread based on your % of road use though, as you can often get a longer life out of road tyres with a harder rubber compound. My mud tyres are looking pretty worn at 35k, which probably isn't great, but in their defence I'm not kind to them offroad and I probably should have balanced/rotated them more often too. $200/tyre was rather cheap anyway.

Re: Replacement Tyres

I've had the original Bridgestone tyres fitted when new (60k wear), Pirrelli Scorpion ATs (55k wear) and now Yokohama Geolandar ATs (60k and still going).
Mix of city driving and some offroading and never treat them with to much care, always giving them plenty of a workout when offroad.
Fuel economy went down a little but more to do with the performance mods than the tyres I expect.

I'll be going with the Yoko's again as they are a nice quiet AT with plenty of grip when you do need it offroad and tough enough to resist damage over rocks.

Re: Replacement Tyres

Hi Everyone,

After lots of reading on this thread i have decided to go with the cooper cs4's tyre size 225/55-18. Did some ringing around today at the authorized dealers and they are about $280 a Tyre. Does anyone know of any place that sells them that's not an authorized dealer in the Brisbane area? Somebody mentioned you can get them cheaper but without the warranty? Is the warranty worth anything?

I've heard that Tyrepower stores stock them. There's one in The Gap, and presumably plenty more stores around Brissy.

Cheers,

Re:

Most Goodyear Tyre service centres stock CS4s too. My local one in Canberra is where I'll be getting mine.
Tyre warranties are an individual choice. I have, on a past car, made good use of the tyre warranty after my darling missus ran onto the edge of a dirt track while passing another vehicle coming the other way and put a stick through the tyre wall on a nearly brand new tyre. The tyre dealer (it was Beaurepaires, I think) replaced the tyre free of charge, smile on the dial, no questions asked. It's times like that when you are thankful for the warranty!

Re:

I think Goodyear are authorised dealers. boyo0704 wants to skip the warranty to keep the capital purchase price down (the way I understand it).

Goodyear Enogerra had a deal on Coopers a few months back $100 a set of 4 I think, but I guess their prices will be higher to start with.

Cheers,
mark
