Need more detail on the noise mate. Could be anything from mud/rocks between the brake discs and rear cover/shroud to a wheel bearing.
Did your mechanic say what evidence he has to say it's the front diff?
If it is the diff I would be trying to source one from a wrecker.

Check the diff oil. If dirty/milky replace it and see if that helps. Probably just replace it anyway.

Has he checked the shaft bearing? Do a forum search and you should find the answer, as I believe Kev was having the same noise and it turned out to be the shaft bearing that was shot.

To check if it is the transfer pinion bearing, just get under the Xtrail and grab the flange where the tailshaft joins to the front transfer case and try to move it up & down.
Also look to see if there is oil leaking from under there sprayed around the transmission hump and sub-frame, or drops of oil on the underside of the transfer case where the rear seal is.
