Please Help been told T30 is dying

Hi Guys, I have been told my Xtrail 2004 T30 front diff is gone and needs to be replaced.

It has a winding noise coming from the front and this started about 18 months ago when I went on the caves to caves trip. I got stuck in mud and when I was helped out the noise started. I thought it was from my AT tyres but last week I bought my old girl new rims and road tyres and the noise is even worse. I took it to the mechanic and he told me its the front diff and could be up for big $$$$$. I don't want to part with it but I am not paying big bucks to get it fixed.
I remember someone telling me they had the same issues and found it was mud stuck between the breaks or something and I have cleaned the old girl up as much as possible.
Can anyone share your thoughts. emoticon

Need more detail on the noise mate. Could be anything from mud/rocks between the brake discs and rear cover/shroud to a wheel bearing.
Did your mechanic say what evidence he has to say it's the front diff?
If it is the diff I would be trying to source one from a wrecker.

Re:

Yeah I thought it was a front bearing but he checked it out and its not.
Its a winding noise which is now getting worse. Steering is fine and does not shack however the noise is pretty bad. He thinks it could be a big job.
I was told the noise was from the A/T tyres however I bought new rims and road tyres last week and its worse. The mechanic will get back to me on Friday to let me know how much its going to be but if its too much I will just have to either trade her in or just sell off for parts.
Bad thing is I have all the bits now to go off rd with the bash plate and A/T with good tread. Just sad to see the old girl that way. I know its just a car.

Check the diff oil. If dirty/milky replace it and see if that helps. Probably just replace it anyway.

Thanks Todd, yeah fingers are crossed its not going to be worth more than the car is lol.
I don't want to let it go the old Exy is a great car.
Hopefully I will catch up with you guys on another day out and ill bring the Prado if the exy is gone.
Sad thing is I bought a set of new rims and she looks nice but these things happen I guess.
Merry Christmas to you and your family. Stay safe.

Re:

Has he checked the shaft bearing? Do a forum search and you should find the answer, as I believe Kev was having the same noise and it turned out to be the shaft bearing that was shot.

Re:

Thanks Jalal, I will ask him to check it.
I don't think it is the diff cause I have been driving it for about 12 months with the noise and I think if it was the diff it would have locked up by now.
Thanks again for the advise. Merry Christmas and all the best.

To check if it is the transfer pinion bearing, just get under the Xtrail and grab the flange where the tailshaft joins to the front transfer case and try to move it up & down.
Also look to see if there is oil leaking from under there sprayed around the transmission hump and sub-frame, or drops of oil on the underside of the transfer case where the rear seal is.
