T30 2003 radiator fan failure

Hi all,
I'm in Sydney , south side and have a 2003 T30 X-trail that has been a great vehicle without a thing going wrong. However last week the number 1 radiator fan (left hand side looking forward) failed. Fuse ok, 12 volts is available at the connector and the ground is also OK. So a few questions for members please.

Is this common?
Has anyone used an after market fan/shroud assembly?
If so, where from and do they work OK ?
Price?

Nissan do not have stock currently and they said about $500 for that fan. So after market looking good.
I found a supplier called Sterling but unsure of quality.

Thanks you,
Pete.

Hi Pete,

In the 10 years I have known the xtrail I never came across a failed radiator fan, so if yours has failed indeed and you have been recommended a new one, I would strongly suggest you pick yourself one from the wreckers, as it would be safe to buy them 2nd hand due to them hardly failing.

It would be a better option than getting an aftermarket one.

Re: T30 2003 radiator fan failure

Hi Pete,

On the last two 4wd trips when crawling behind other vehicles on a dusty hot track I have noticed my temp guage climb too high. Switched off the aircon until I got moving a bit quicker and then the temp came down so I guess one of my fans has failed too. I have a 2003 T30 also.

I'd be interested to see what price you find the fans for at the wreckers and will probably go this option as Jalal suggested if I find it is my fan that has failed and not just an earth or connector.

Have you tried seeing if there is a motor replacement available ?

Re: T30 2003 radiator fan failure

G'day Jalal,

Thanks for that. I spoke to my trusted mechanic today and he's seen it quite a bit on Nissans. He mentioned Pulsar in particular. I'll have a look around wreckers but will explore after market too depending on availability. I spoke to Nissan today Kirrawee (I think) and he said a single fan was about 500 bucks!Ouch! They are on back order so they must be being used by someone.(front end prangs?) Given that new ones are not available maybe 2nd hand ones will be hard to find and pricey.
I'll let you guys know how I go.

Pete.

Re: T30 2003 radiator fan failure

G'day Kev,

Maybe your problem is just insufficient airflow on a hot day. Following other hot cars, hot day, low speed, really plays havoc with cooling. My old falcon was a shocker for that.

The fans are not hard to check as the connectors are accessible and easy to disconnect. The sockets are kind of small so I cut off a few tails off some old capacitors I had in my junk box to insert into the sockets.
A new motor for fan one was quoted around 500 bucks. I'm not sure whether it is just a motor or complete LH fan assembly.
I have not had a comprehensive look for after market bits but so far I have found 2. One at 144 or so for the whole shroud with 2 fans, the other 350 for the same.

As I mentioned to Jalal i will keep you informed.

Cheers,
pete.

Re:

Surely an aftermarket will fit close enough and then splice the wiring from the connector to the new fan.
They are available from any parts shop and online for as little as $40 for a 10 inch fan.

Re:

I just had a quick look on a wreckers site, saw the fan assembly with both fans for under $120. Call around the wreckers. Otherwise you'll just end up with a replacement motor from nissan or aftermarket can't be that hard

Re: Re:

Hi Ben,

Thanks for the reply. Which wrecker did you have a look at please?

A new single motor for that fan is 525 bucks from Nissan so that will not happen.None in the country anyway even if I wanted to spend that much.

I have had a look at some fans at wreckers today and was a waste of time. Wrong type or rooted.

The after market one I was thinking about is not the same despite being advertised as suiting my model. Shroud different depth / shape and the plug for the left hand fan has 4 pins not 2. Too different to risk buying and being mistaken.

Regards,
Pete.

Re:

I just checked partsplus.com.au, there is a few wreckers listed under that brand and one close by to me, otherwise NissanHere have been good in the past and can usually post things at a decent price

One easy way to get the fan to come on for testing is to remove the temperature sender plug on the side thermostat housing (black plug), should make it think there is an error and will make the fans come on

Thanks for the links Ben. emoticon
I'll chase them up. In the meantime I found a very old Davies Craig thermo fan that I had on a car years ago. I've adapted it (electrically and mechanically) to the exy shroud as a stop gap.Took hours but it is OK.
It will do until I find a decent used one.
