Newbie looking for older Exy

Hi All

Not sure if this is the correct thread for this question, but we're looking to buy a second-hand X-trail. We're living in Wollongong (NSW), and a few searches on carsales.com.au and similar sites provide a few options for our $10k budget. The only real requirements that we're looking for, are that the car is automatic, and has the lowest reasonable odometer reading.

Our search has turned up a few cars aged from 2002 to 2007 with ~100k on the clock, and ranging from the Ti-ST to the Ti-L models.

As we don't really mind whether the seat covers are cloth or leather, could anyone please advise whether there are any particular issues to look out for with these older models? Are there any standard major service milestones (~120k?) that we need to consider before jumping in?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Walt.

Re:

There are a couple of common issues with the T30 model X Trail.

Crank and Cam sensors.
O2 sensors.
Butterfly screws.

There are a whole heaps of good points about them too so don't let the above list put you off the model.

Use the search function at the top of each page to find the threads for these issues.
They are a bit of a read but at least you will have a better understanding at what you might be up for.

Re: Newbie looking for older Exy

Hi Walter,

Please do a search on "buying second hand" and you will find existing threads with hints and tips as to what to look-out for.

I wouldn't worry too much about the need to replace the sensors (if the previous owners hasn't done it already). This is normal and comes with age with the car requiring these sensors to be replaced.

The butterfly screws issue Tony mentioned is a know one too but it is very rare, so it is good to keep it in the back of your mind and look for symptoms of it in the car you are buying (i.e. power loss, excessive oil usage and knocking sounds from the engine bay).

The rest of the information including all of the T30 Recalls is included in the existing threads we have on the forum.

Re:

Many thanks for both of your replies - really appreciate it. I just came across another thread on this forum that had the 'use the search function' reply - if only I had seen it before making this post emoticon

Thanks again.
