Series V has the steering wheel lights ON from factory.

Not all models, only the Ti and TL I believe (and possibly the ST-L). The ST and TS haven't got this working from factory.

Ah that explains it. I only bothered test driving the Ti and TL models.

Hooked the lights up the other day.

I found that a floppy drive power connector has the inserts that fit the steering wheel connector. All I had to do (apart from wiring to the esp switch) was remove the insert form the floppy power connector with a pointy object then insert it into the steering wheel connector and push it in. Fitted firm and tested unplugging and plugging it in a few times.

Re:

Hooked up steering wheel control lights to ESC switch and it works on Series V perfectly. Thanks to fellow members on this forum for sharing information.

Few tips to make the job more easy.

Use following clip to connect to a wire, rather than soldering or cutting the wire.

Image

Use following fuse holder in series while connecting 12v.

I used heat shrink tube to cover the joint between fuse holder wire and extension wire to ESC sw. Fuse holder comes with wire but they are small.

I had head unit removed to take photos and then connected steering wheel controls but the lights were not comming on. Any reason why head unit needs to be connected.

Re: How to light up the steering controls & gear selector (T31 X-Trail)

I did mine today, easy job. I connected mine slightly different, instead of tapping into the red illumination wire on the esc off switch (i found it was too hard to get into release clip) i found it easier for me to tap into the red illumination wire on the hdc switch, you could tap into any illumination wire if you wanted to there are plenty of options there . The centre console unclips easily, i also used an inline fuse .5 amp and ran the wire through corrugated plastic tube the same as factory wiring to give it better protection. All the joints are soldered and heat shrinked, i also put solder the end of the wire that goes into the steering column plug next to the green one to hold it in the plug and contact well against the pin. Great mod it looks really good and seeing all the controls at night is easier. I am now thinking about the switches in the drivers door now, the mirror control and drivers window switch are lit but the central lock and rear window lock off switches dont but look like they might be able to, anyone tried this ? I might have a look one day.

Re:

I would like to give exact instructions on how to get my Xtrail 2013 ST model to have it's steering wheel lights to be lit up (and also the automatic gearstick if possible) to someone else that is going to do the job for me.
I am little confused by how long this thread is, since the thread has been going for sometime (I have read multiple pages which contradict each other). Can someone please point me to the right page (or give me instructions clearly again) for my model so I can pass on the instructions to a man to help me do the job?
Thanks
Vickie

Re: Gauge of wire used.

Hi All, just had a look at the connections under the steering wheel and was surprised the thin gauge wire used on connections and connectors. Is it ok to use same gauge wire to perform steering wheel illumination mod. Or is advised to use heavier gauge??
Thanks in advance for advice on this.
Regards Paul
