Has anyone hooked up the Rhino Rack wind fairing to the heavy duty bars on the X-Trail? Getting crazy vibrations above 80km/h and im hoping this would be the best fix

Re: T31 Series 3/4/5 Roof rack options

I also have the prorack whisperbars and find them to be quiet.

One problem I had was that I thought the standard distance between them was quite short on the X-trails, making it hard to secure longish loads. So what I have done is bought a Thule "Goalpost".

http://www.thule.com.au/details.php?p_id=273&listid=5&slistid=&seo=Thule_997_Goalpost&menuid=&submenuid=

These fit into the 2'' square socket on the towbar and then it is one 2'' vertical square post that supports a third bar on the vehicle.

They are a very well made solid piece of kit with plenty of height adjustment, even come with 2 straps that fit nicely under the X-trail rear bumper to stop any lateral movement.

I think they are specifically designed for kayaks, small boats, etc, but are also suitable for other types of long loads that don't sit well on the 2 bars, like lengths of timber or conduit.

Also, it blocks the number plate so a bike plate is required when using it.

They have a recommended retail price of $315.00. but I got mine from sydneyharbourkayaks.biz for $130.00 delivered.

Speaking for the Rhino Heavy Duty Bars:

When I have them on, they are noisy as hell. Whistle non-stop even at low speeds (40km/h, etc), so irritating. So only buy them if you specifically need the sturdiness of a heavy duty bar. I bought them specifically to mount my rooftop tent for the last christmas trip.

Like Todd's though, they are also adjustable. So size-wise, they'd fit either the T30 or T31, the only difference would be the mounting feet/kit for the particular car/model. I can't remember my exact price, but I think I paid the higher end of your quoted figures or just above? (I needed them quickly and couldn't be bothered looking around at the time)

The secret to cut down the noise is to make sure you have the rubber fitted to the top of the bar and get another strip and fit it to the bottom (before final fitting)

Have the rubber fitted on top (with no gaps) but hadn't thought of the rubber strip on the bottom, although during my trip I did tape the ENTIRE bar with heavy duty duct tape, haha. I hate noises, so I went pretty overboard in my attempt to eliminate it. No luck though emoticon

Re: T31 Series 3/4/5 Roof rack options

Hi,

I have just finished fabricating a set of roof bars for my series 2. I made them out of 75mm x 25mm RHS (rolled hollow section) They are approx. 1250mm wide and sit about 50mm from the roof. I used 25mm square tube for the uprights and 25mm x 3mm flat bar for where it all bolts to the xtrail. Took about 2 hours to fabricate and paint. I then carefully cut out the plastic roof covers on the roof rails for a neat finish. I am impressed with the comments from fellow xtrail (and others) on their sleekness. No noise at all even at 110 km/r. Total cost under $50.00 and carried 93kg of particle board with ease.

Re:

Have any of you guys fitted platforms to your factory racks?
Either the alloy platforms or steel mesh platforms...
Is it a possibility or do I need to replace the bars with ones that extend over the 'feet' at the ends?
