bigwilliestyle's T31 in the Kimberley
Hello all, thought I would make a little thread about my ride and document some of it's travels.
I live in Western Australia in the Kimberley. I chose the T31 X-trail as I wanted a hyrbrid that could do reasonable freeway mileage (petrol is 1.80 a litre here) but still have some offroad ability to navigate those special tracks up here. I do get some odd looks from people in their Prado's.
So far, the X-trail has been a great car up here, and can get me to 99 percent of the places if I drive carefully. I have recieved some nasty dings to the underbody which has me both driving more careful now and wanting a proper bash plate system. Some more clearance would be handy as well.
We have Toyota Troop carriers at work, and from my personal experience, I would say that the X-trail seems to do quite well on the tracks up here and is less jumpy on the corrugations.
I spent a lot of my weekends, exploring the Duncan Highway and the Tanami Road. Yesterday, we made the trek to Wolf Creek Crater. A nice drive, but was about 2 hours of corrugations. Its an easy drive, but the amount of stock crossing the road and the kangaroos can make it much more difficult towards the end of the day.

Re: bigwilliestyle's T31 in the Kimberley
I got up on Saturday morning after a good sleep in and decided we would go camping at the Bungle Bungle, Purnulullu National Park. The track in is only 50km, but is quite rough. The x-trail was great, but I did manage to lose the plastic under covers - maybe at the river crossing?
There is several river crossings, which were getting quite low since my last visit. The deepest being up to the top of the wheel.
I probably went a bit quick through one of the river crossings. I still slowed down considerably, but an idle speed probably would have been wiser. I managed to drench the entire engine bay in mud and water. Some water seems to have entered the intake, but I checked the filter and it seemed ok. The intake looks like it may have a drainage extension prior to the air filter?
If anyone is travelling through the area, I highly recommend visiting this World Heritage site. Just call the park to check the conditions and water levels prior as they can sometimes be much higher.

Re:
I have quite literally bent, torn and mangled every heat shield mounted underneath my exy, mate.. it's pretty easy to do. I've bent most of them back into quasi-factory-resembling shapes for them to continue doing their "job", but I've also had a few welded back on to eliminate annoying rattles and future dramas.
