Rounded me nuts !

Hi guys.
Replacing my brake pads front and rear. Front went off without a hitch. Following the exelent guide on this site.
Got to the left rear and the 2 main bolts holding on the bake assembly are pretty much rounded I before I started (thanks previous owner) and now totally rounded.
Whats the best way to get them off ?
Preferably the cheapest option as I don't have many mechanical tools.
Also how to I get replacements. Not like I can take one out and drive to the auto shop emoticon

Re: Rounded me nuts !

Use an angle grinder (if you don't have one a metal file will do it just very slowly) to gently grind the side of the bolt to give it straight edges again. You should then be able to use a shifter to undo the bolt. You will still need to replace them once you're done as they will be weaker.

Hmm vice grips sounds about my speed. I usually call em nut f..kers emoticon Ok in this instance as there being replaced.
Is there a specific number or classification for the bolt ? So I can get one without having to take one off the car ?

Re:

Best check with a Nissan dealer to see if they are high tensile or not.
I doubt it though cause if they were they wouldn't have rounded off in the first place.

Re: Re:

I've found that WD40 + vise grips (multi-grips) + extreme force has shifted the most stubborn of rusted on nuts & bolts.

If that fails the first time, then apply heat with a blowtorch to the offending bolt and repeat the exercise with the grips to 'sweat' it out.

Re:

Just buy the nuts from Nissan.. it'll cost a bit more but at least you will get the right ones. Just ordered 5 small bolts for the front driveshaft, they were about $3.50 each, a little exxy but at least they are the right ones and were at the dealer next day from Melbourne

Also you can try getting a 12 point socket 1 mm smaller than the head size and hammering it on, or using a 6 pointed socket of the right size as it'll grip the flats not the rounded edges

Re: Rounded me nuts !

Hi Guys, Loctite make a freezer spray that you just spray on the offending nut, leave it for a few seconds and then hit it with an American spanner (Hammer) the nut just shatters. How easy is that, saves lots of barked up knuckles and saves a lot of money going in the swear jar, so it pays for itself in no time. Once you have used this magic stuff you'll wonder how you ever emoticon got by without it. emoticon
