posticon Multiple issues - looking for help

Hey peeps,

I'll try to explain as much as possible as to assist with what I'm hoping will be some positive answers to help me work out what is going on.

Model: 2008 SX petrol 6 speed man
Currently 116 000kms, (serviced at 110 000, major service belts etc done at 100 000)

1st issue: during a relocation road trip (3500km trip over 4 days) my the vehicle began to shutter/stammer about 6 quick times, then returned to normal. I was in cruise control. I pulled over to the side of the road to check it out, as I thought it was something to do with the light trailer I was towing. As all seemed good I got back into the car and tried to take off (under medium acceleration) the car was struggling to gain speed and power was dropping out, I managed to baby it up to speed, then lock in cruise control, in which it stayed at speed with only a few stammers here and there. As we were only 30 mins out of our next stop, we carried on. A the time I had 1/4 tank of fuel.

We fueled up, went over the car again, and then took off. The car was fine. Then, we hit the road again. A the end of the day, we hit 1/4 of a tank of fuel again, and they exact same thing happened, but this time the car stammered, then just began to slow down, I tried to rev the car but as much as a pushed on the accelerator, nothing happened, like the car was off. I pulled over to the side of the road and a few seconds later it konked out. I got the spare fuel from the trailer rand filled it up. Again, once I filled up, all was well.

We continued to travel the following day, and the same thing happened at half a tank, except it didn't konk out, it just stamped/stuttered under hard acceleration (when I was trying to I take slower vehicles) so I had to sit behind slow cars the entire way until, we could fill the tank up again.

So all in all, I need to keep the tank full, or near full. When I reached my location and pulled the trailer off, it drove much better, and I can go down to about half a tank before it starts doing this stuttering thing/loss of power business.

Suddenly today though, I had a full tank, driving on the highway, going up through the mountains, on the way down, the car did the loss of power thing again and I couldn't rev it, it's like the accelerator was cut, I was able to pull over to the side of the road safely. It would start for 5 mins, tried to kick over etc and eventually started. Some of the car warning lights stayed on, then I turned the car off, the. Started it again, and they disappeared. (Hill descent light, 4wd lock mode, airbag etc)

The second issue - when braking down hill, or braking at speed, the car vibrates aggressively. I have owned the car since new and have never taken it serious 4wding, only light dirt tracks when I take the boat out. It did it badly with the box trailer on, then again today without it. I need to keep the braking steady and often, as if I give to much brake it vibrates aggressively.

Thanks for the help in advance, I have read it could be the fuel filter, or vapor lock, and even something inside the fuel tank not doing it job.

Re:

I have this shuddering effect lately in my 2008 Ti.

I have a how would you say a wonky shake from side to side thru the car not the steering either when picking up speed or slowing down.

As for your problem it sounds like you picked up some dirty fuel so taking it in somewhere and get them to do a error report on it and see what comes up and also check the fuel filter.

The shuddering under brakes could be your discs are warped and get this checked out as this is what I did and mine are fine along with the balance and wear of the tyres.

Since you stated that you have a manual the current problem with that year build is the auto gearbox so the stuttering is not from that and your clutch maybe on the way out or slipping.

Regards Scot

Re:

Cheers, how hard is the fuel filter to get to? Is it something I can attempt to change at home with basic tools or is it best to just get the whole looked at?

Re:

I agree with Scot but the fuel filter should have been changed at the 100k service.
Maybe your injectors are dirty and need a good ultrasonic clean.

The shudder is definitely warped discs and machining or replacing the front rotors will fix the issue.
The front rotors are very soft and am surprised that it has taken 4 years for them to warp.

Re:

Loss of power could well be cam/crank sensors, did you get a check engine light when this was happening? Haven't heard of it on a 2008 though, seems pretty new to be getting the issue, but could still be a bad sensor

Get your wheel alignment checked for the vibration when braking too.

Re:

You said it started out being fuel level related. Do X-trails have a sumerged fuel pump (pump in tank) or external pump?
Could be your pump sucks air once you get down to a 1/4 tank or it might simply be crug blocking up the fule pickup which gets shifted temporarily every time more fuel is put in the tank.
Braking vibration is usually rotors, modern factory rotors are quite soft and don't last long.

Re: Multiple issues - looking for help

Rosters were the issue - have been replaced. Problem solved.

Nissan said it was the fuel pump and quoted me $1000 to replace. I conducted further research and a mate suggested vapor lock. So went down to repco, purchased a complete fuel system cleaner for $22 and problem is fixed.

Saving me $978
