Re: T30 Suspension Lift

The Pedders spring issue was differential settlement on one side of my car (drivers side). They pulled the front springs out and found out they had been labelled wrong and installed on opposite sides. They were re-installed correctly and all is well now.

This was a T31 not a T30 but I believe still may be relevant for anyone going for a spring lift instead of spacers.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

Did the King spring lift on mine over easter ,mainly for towing of my caravan, put them in myself ,wasn't overly hard to do ,only had one stubborn strut top nut that wouldnt budge and rounded off ,luckily i could get my grinder in to grind a flat on one side to get it moving, took me about 4 hrs even with mucking around with the stupid nut, just if people are going to attempt this yourself ,take note of the direction the spring top plate and the strut top placement as you could bugger this up quite easily ,but i reckon it handles a lot better now ,especially cornering, and yeah would recommend it as well

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

hey everyone quick question. i have done a king spring lift and have the opportunity to get some 50mm strut spacers. i was thinking that if i did this it would cause excessive wear to the CV's. Is this correct or would it be safe to do a spring and spacer lift together. Has anyone done this together before? From the pages i have read its either one or the other. Sorry i don't have time to read the 68 pages of thread and couldn't find it in the search function. Need to know today as I could possibly buy some for a good price.

Cheers

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

I wouldn't do it Max. All you would end up with is CVs driving along at or near their lowest point all the time. This would put extra pressure on them (but hey so does any lift) but my major concern would be that you would have almost no down travel as the CVs can only move so far.

Re:

There was actually a member who did just that. I think he was based in canada? He had a black T30 with a type8 style bullbar up front. If you can find that thread/page, you'll have all the answers you seek.

Re: T30 Suspension Lift

thanks for that todd. its what i thought in the back of my mind. im buying a bash plate and had the opportunity to get the spacers. its either one or the other i was thinking and i opted for the springs as for better handling and towing capabilities at the time. if i could do it safe with no troubles it would be awesome haha.

ian i will have a look to see if i can find it but after todd has backed up what i was already thinking i don't think i will do it.

cheers guys

Yeah, I've done it. The stock Nissan CV's can handle the increased angle when driving level, as long as the CV boots don't get split or cracked. I actually found that the Nissan joints are quite good in that regard when comparing to many different joints, now that I've looked into the issue in more detail.

The problem with the double lift lies with the downward travel of the suspension, as Todd already explained. If you limit the downward travel, the CV's should be ok. Of course there will be increased wear, as with any independent suspension lift, but I've experienced no such problems (except with low quality aftermarket replacement outer joints). Also, it will affect the articulation if the downward travel is limited.

The problems I encountered with the double lift and the CV joints were caused by running the angles at or near the full droop of the suspension, in snow when bottomed out for example. If the travel is not limited, the joint will quite easily tear itself apart in those situations. The inner joints will be the first to go, since the outers are Rzeppa type joints that can handle greater angles than the inner tripod types.

Oh yeah, my T30 is a diesel and it uses a different half shaft in the front left corner, so for petrol models there might be some issues that I haven't experienced. If I recall correctly, there was already a member who tried this on a petrol but eventually didn't go ahead with it...

Re:

I believe that you would need an engineers sign off for the double lift.
Suspension installers don't recommend having a coil lift and a spacer lift together.
Not only CV trouble but the geometry of the front end is way out of wack and is a PITA to get aligned.

I don't think anyone who lifts their car/truck 3 inches or more is going to be worried about a few degrees of camber emoticon Actually, all angles except for camber were quite close to factory specs even after installing the double lift, without doing any alignment before checking them.

Anyway, the alignment will always be a little off after every time I go 4WDing.

In Australia, I think you know best what's required regulation-wise when lifting the X-Trail. In here, 77 mm or 3 inches is the maximum for passenger SUVs without a special permit.
