Re: What level should the oil be after a service ?

Please ask them for an explanation of why it should take 20 minutes to check the oil. The only thing I can think of is that they drive the car into the workshop, have a coffee while the oil drains back and then check it. Checking the oil on a cold engine is a 1 minute procedure.

I was also told that i did not no how to check the oil properly as there is a special procedure to do that and it takes around 20 min to do properly.

Maybe they can enlighten us all by sharing that "special procedure" which seems to defy the clearly stated Nissan Japan ones for checking the oil level on a diesel engine as stated below:

Print this and show it to them, so they can account for the extra 10 minutes they spent stirring their coffee and admiring your exy LOL emoticon

Oops I forgot, some Nissan dealers charge their time in double emoticon

Perhaps you should name the dealer in the shonky dealers thread at the top of this section.

As Jalal shows in the extract, even a warm engine should only take 10 minutes to check the oil.

Out of the 7+ litres in the diesel, surely 1/2 litre isn't going to show as such a low reading.

Get them to show you the tin that the oil came in. I seriously wouldn't trust that they've put the right oil in. Unfortunately without an industrial chemist I don't know how you could check what is actually in there.

Makes notes about all this, with dates and times and what has happened. Keep the receipts. If you end up with a clogged DPF down the track then you'll have some of what you'll need to push the warranty claim.

Re: What level should the oil be after a service ?

The way he told me it should be done was that it was to be run for 10 min. then sat and let to cool down for ten min. and thats fine but when i told him that i had let it sit all day with out running it at all and checked the oil being stone cold i was told that wont be an acurate reading ......

any way that will be the last time i will be going in there...

least i wont have to be talked to like i dont have a clue......

andyp- i have named them all ready in the shonky dealer thread for other reasons. like you said i dont think half a litre would be such a big diference.

maybe the xtrail forum sticker should be a bit bigger on the back window.....lol....

Re: What level should the oil be after a service ?

Diesel T31 series 5. A couple of questions which I think relate to this thread.

I am planning on providing my own oil for my first oil change at 10K.

Generally, how does a mechanic know how much oil to pour in? The exy takes 7.4 to 7.5 litres of oil. Oil comes in containers of 5L or 10L (or more or less); so is it pre-measured or do they guess, check and then top up until the dipstick shows full?

Second, will it be annoying to provide the mechanic with a 10L oil container rather than 2 x 5L containers.

thanks

Re:

Generally the oil level is just a guess using the dipstick as their guide, a little at a time.
They generally have an idea of how much is drained from the sump to start with.
A Brand specific mechanic (Nissan) will know how much to put in exactly, but they will still use the dipstick to make sure.

As a rule of thumb, 10 litres will always cost less than buying 2 x 5 litre containers.
When you think of it, the remaining oil over 3 or 4 changes will supply you enough oil to do another oil change .

Re: What level should the oil be after a service ?

Provide your mechanic with the amount of oil as indicated in the manual for an oil and filter change.

Correct level for engine oil is the top oil mark on the dipstick; measure when the motor is warm and has been switched off for 5 minutes (so oil in the upper part of the motor can drain down to the sump).

If you are changing your own oil get a oil drain pan graduated in litres. Super cheap auto should have them for $10. They are just a plastic oil catching bowl with marks inside to show how much has drained in. You then have a good guide as to how much fresh oil to add to motor. Take it easy adding oil; add a little at a time when near full - filling above the top mark is bad as it can lead to frothing the oil because it is too high and the crank shaft agitates it too much and it aerates.
