T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect System (including Navigation)

My new Exy has the neat new Nissan Connect unit fitted which I am very pleased with, especially the AVM. However, the GPS doesn't show anywhere near the information that a standard Tom Tom or similar unit has like street numbers, speed etc. Is anyone aware of any way of upgrading the standard unit to a better GPS or are they locked down? Thanks

Re: Nissan Connect

There is information posted in HERE regarding the Nissan AVM (Around View Monitor) system set-up and based on the information provided on the Nissan Japan website, you should be able to connect the AVM to an aftermarket head-unit which would have better GPS capabilties than the factory one.

It is certainly worth exploring as the Series 3 and 4 Eclipse GPS work pretty well and there further cheap Chinese units which are even better.

Re: T31 Series 5 Nissan Connect

I agree, the GPS unit is a huge let down considering the price I paid for the Ti. According to the unit the maps are a 2011 version. Nissan told me to look in the manual for info on how to update - and the book says speak to Nissan. My dealer is looking in to it but all in all the poor quality of the Nissan GPS has left a pretty disappointing taste in my mouth =(

Re: Nissan Connect

Has anyone with one of the new AVM (around view) headunits had a chance to look at the wiring yet. I am very interested in this as my new TL will have this system. for me the AVM is a great idea but the headunit just looks like a massive let down, with its small screen and lack of tuning options. I have a pioneer AVIC headunit that will be removed from my current car and I would like to put it into the X-trail but dont want to loose the AVM.

As mentioned in previous posts it seems that the AVM module sends a composit signal of the 4 cameras to the headunit making it theoretically possible to use an aftermarket headunit to disply it. I have tried all the audio fitters in Adelaide and they all say "yes should be possible" but none have had a look at one yet so no experience.

I am really interested as to the exhistence of an independant RCA video feed or if the feed comes directly from the loom and will need to be isolated, does someone have a wiring diagram or pic of the loom and plugs from a Series 5 TI or TL with the AVM headunit?

Thanks

Re:

Tom,
The head units are easy to remove.
Pull away the trim surround and undo the 4 screws that hold the unit in place.
Probably easier if you look yourself.

I would imagine that there are no more than the 3 wiring looms that enter the radio like on other recent models with steering wheel controls, the radio would be a slave to the AVM just to show you the vision.
The module would be else where.

Thanks Tony, I'm not picking up the car until Friday, yay! it was meant to be another 2 weeks! So I am just getting ahead of myself as I have not been able to look myself yet. I will let everyone know the outcome as soon as I have had a look.

Had a couple days to test out my new TL, must agree that the grps is disappointing- no speed camera alerts, no speed limits for roads etc etc, be keen to find out if the mapping upgrade will recitfy this, mine is Dec 2112 build, landed in Oz about the 12th Jan this year and still has 2011 map !!

Re:

Dealer suggests a map update is nearly here, keen to see if they will charge for it given its "current" mapping is 2 yrs old and its loaded with northern hemisphere POI warnings for speed cameras lol

Re:

I lodged complaint with customer care about the northern hemisphere speed camera alerts- they said aus nissan didnt support speed camera alerts but that shouldnt matter cause the road speeds are supported, i then pointed out that they werent on this system and they had no idea. Very disappointed with nissan's lack of support on this system, spoek with dealer about it who emailed nissan and 4 weeks later no reply........
