Yeah it's definitely still under manufacturer warranty. They apparently looked at it and decided it needed greasing (and that it costs $150 to grease up), but I don't reckon they did actually spend any time diagnosing it properly. Probably because I have it serviced elsewhere they weren't interested in offering me much assistance, pass the buck back to those that do. I have a connection with the sales manager of that dealership so may get in touch with him to put the pressure on getting a proper diagnosis.

Hoping to get the detailed service manual so I can print the relevant bits and take it in to them (or another Nissan service centre) and establish that they really do need to replace the shaft.

Nissan Blacktown have called me back and want to have another look at the Xy. Will update here at the end of the week after they've had a proper look.

Well... another look and they stood by this not being covered under warranty. Said the hub and shaft splines needed greasing and the wheel nut retensioning, and that the people that service my car should have been retensioning the wheel nut all along. Not being a mechanic, and having run out of time to chase this, I paid the $154 and it now sounds normal again. Personally I think it is a temporary fix, but time will tell.

The exact description on the tax invoice is: "checked for knocking noise, found from front driveshaft hub assy, removed wheels & unbolted drive shafts, moved drive shafts back & applied grease to hubs & shaft splines, refitted shafts & retensioned hub nuts to correct torque, road tested ok".

So... what's the verdict, should Ultra Tune (where I get it serviced) have been retensioning these for me? I can't see anywhere in my logbook where this is suggested as being required. The closest thing I can find on my 40k service I recently had is to "Replace front wheel bearing grease (except for sealed type bearing)" (is this a sealed bearing?) or perhaps "Inspect free-running hub grease". Or maybe on the 30k service it suggests "Inspect steering gear & linkage, axle & suspension parts, propeller shaft & front drive shaft".

Value any thoughts!

Brett.

If it doesn't say to do it in the book then it doesn't have to be done.
Should Ultra Tune also check the tension of every other bolt in the car, I don't think so.
Nissan are the same, they only follow the service manual.
A load of crap I reckon.

Re:

Just an update on this... I logged a case with Nissan directly who are going to see if this should have been covered under warranty. They did not have any cases logged in their system requesting approval for warranty repairs from the dealer, but said dealers often have their own reps within Nissan who give verbal answers over the phone without logging calls, so it doesn't mean much that there is nothing already logged for this case.

When I hear back, I'll let you know! I know it's only $150 but for me it's the principle of the thing... The car is only at 40k, all services done properly... Shouldn't have to spend anything above servicing on it at this stage in my opinion.

Well, Nissan came back and said it is definitely not covered under warranty, even though it is not in the logbook. They said that most Nissan dealers would check these things as part of the service, as well as use genuine Nissan parts for any repairs, and that I am more likely to have more non-warranty repairs if I keep getting it taken care of at non-Nissan service centres. All part of keeping the money in the family methinks.

Re:

Hi all,

started to get a ticking or tensile noise in the front passenger side near the wheel. also a clunking like sloppy drive train. Not good at only 24k on the clock.

Dropped it into Northern motor group Bundoora and after attempting to explain to the girl booking it in I was aske to go with the mechanic for a test drive

Explained the noises and tried to reproduce. Got lots of thuds but no tensile ticking.
He said yep know what it is especially when I explained it was when changing directions underload.

Was told it is the from CV's that do not get enough grease when manufactured and installed.
The drive shafts were taken out greased and put back along with some brake paste(?)
Got the the call to pick the car up just after lunch.
The issue has now gone and the whole thing feels tighter.
Looks like I am not alone with a 4 pages of similar issues here in this thread.

Have had 2 services and repair done at NMG and so far very happy.
sorry for the new post in the wrong place. Was also meant as a pleasing warranty service experience

Re: T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

Im pretty sure mine has a similar issue...

Mine is a 2011 Tl 6 speed .

From reverse to first i get a dull thud ..

If im just cruising along coasting i will get an ocasional dull thud/clicking.

If i boot it out of a corner once i straighten up and let the throttle up to cruze i will get a short metallic sound clicking (very faint ) then disappears.

You can feel it through the gear stick a little bit too .

I will mention it on its next service at 10,000 its that faint that to even hear it you have to be on a smooth road stereo off and windows up otherwise it goes unnoticed most of the time.

Sometimes it doesn't do it for a few day then it returns ....

Re: T31 Axle Splines causing clicking noise.

I had the same clicking noise from take off and mentioned it to the dealer (Hornsby Nissan) as part of the scheduled 50k service and they lubes up the splines free of charge (warranty expired in March). Paid the fixed service price of $218 for the 50k.

Thumbs up to the dealer and noise has gone too.
